Sporting Kansas City comeback derailed v Houston Dynamo

After four home matches without a victory and five in MLS play overall, Sporting Kansas City (2-4-5 at night’s start) needed a win. Enter rival Houston Dynamo (4-4-2) for a Saturday night match at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, KS. And after a Daniel Sallio second half equalizer, hope was bright. Sporting KC Manager Peter Vermes, handcuffed by injuries to center back Dany Rosero and midfielder Remi Walter (and midfielder Erik Thommy out due to personal reasons), put out the following lineup for Matchday 12 for SKC: Our matchday form #SKCvHOU | @BlueKC pic.twitter.com/RPP8xDnMlI — Sport ..read more

Sporting KC’s Vermes on New Signings, Player Recruitment and Analytics

About one third of the 2024 Major League Soccer season has come and gone. Sporting Kansas City have played 11 of their 34 regular season games and results have been below the standard the coach, players fans and media have set for the team. Sporting KC find themselves in 10th place in the MLS Western Conference. They have just 11 points through 11 games with a 2W-5L-4D record. Outside of their US Open Cup win on Wednesday against a third division foe, they haven’t won a league game since March 30th against Toronto FC. That’s compounded by their relatively inactive primary transfer window, whic ..read more

Mother’s Day Match Preview: NC Courage at KC Current
KC Soccer Journal
by Xander Kennedy

It’s safe to assume that the Current will be excited to return home. Not only has their three-match road trip often been frustrating, but they seem to have forgotten how to score goals. Over their past two matches, they’ve outshot their opponents by a combined 48 to 14 and yet have had to settle for 1-1 and 0-0 draws. However, a return to the friendly confines of CPKC Stadium should help them snap out of this scoring drought. In three home matches thus far this season, the Current are 3-0-0 and have scored 14 goals for an average of 4.67 goals scored per match. In five away games, the Current ..read more

Breakdown: Sporting Kansas City too methodical?
KC Soccer Journal
by Robert Rusert

Back to Sporting Kansas City this week on Breakdown of the match. Let’s get into it (no reason to be slow about it…). At 55:58 in last Saturday night’s 1-0 loss at Real Salt Lake, left winger Daniel Salloi has two passing options that will likely lead to a teammate penetrating RSL’s box. Erik Thommy is making a diagonal run from the middle, while Alan Pulido lurks behind Thommy with only one man marking him. Credit: AppleTV Despite Salloi knowing that Thommy has an explosive first touch into space and attacking momentum that will carry the German past his retreating defender, Salloi does not ..read more

Juice Boxes and Post Game Stats: Pulido Scores Milestone Goal in Win
KC Soccer Journal
by Mike Kuhn

The name of the game in cup competition is survive and advance. Teams aren’t always going to play their best, and when a team in the top division travels to a lower division side there’s always a little extra in that game to make it more meaningful. Last night wasn’t the best performance by Sporting KC in their 2-1 win over Union Omaha to advance to the round of 16 in this year’s US Open Cup, but it was job done. Here are the stats and milestones from Wednesday night. Sporting KC Alan Pulido’s goal was the 600th away goal scored by Sporting in all competitions. Pulido’s goal was his 10th game ..read more

What we learned: KC Current @ Seattle Reign
KC Soccer Journal
by Cindy Lara

The Kansas City Current wrapped up a three-game road trip in Seattle to face the Reign, the first match between these teams in 2023. It would be a familiar matchup between head coaches Vlatko Andonovski and Laura Harvey, who are the only remaining coaches from the NWSL’s opening season in 2013 and who faced one another in the 2014 and 2015 championship games, with the same teams they currently lead. And maybe that was part of the reason for the 0-0 draw last night, that familiarity Harvey has of Vlatko’s style and being able to defend well against the Current’s attack. It could also be the sho ..read more

Sporting KC squeak out 2-1 win over Omaha in US Open Cup
KC Soccer Journal
by Juan Cisneros

Sporting Kansas City squeak out a 2-1 victory over Union Omaha in front of a sold out crowd at Caniglia Field, home of the University of Nebraska-Omaha men’s and women’s soccer teams. [Fair warning: this first half recap will feel a bit harsh, but if you watched the game, you know the team deserves it.] The first half was about as uneventful of a 45-minutes as Sporting Kansas City has had this season. It should be noted that the starting XI was comprised of mostly backups and players who don’t see the field during the regular season. That being said, the team was disorganized at every level ..read more

Journal Entries When we at the KC Soccer Journal were The Blue Testament, we would often write stories called Blue Links or Blue Notes that rounded up stories you may have missed. Welcome back to Journal Entries (title pending). Let’s get to the news! A Pulido Pay Cut? Last fall, Alan Pulido signed a new three-year contract with Sporting Kansas City. That deal will keep him around until just before he turns 36-years-old. At the time that he re-signed, there were rumors out of Mexico that he would get a massive pay raise from his previous $2.2 million to $4.4 million per season. For a ..read more
