Local business and property owners recently voiced concerns to the Ashland Board of Alderman about an ongoing traffic issue they say occurs on Redbud Lane.

The Boone County Commission announced on April 30th the recipients of the second and final round of roughly $6.6 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding. More than 100 organizations applied for funds, with over $53 million sought between the applicants.
19 entities were chosen to receive second round funds and almost half were directed to infrastructure projects. The recipients from Southern Boone are the City of Ashland, awarded $290,000 for stormwater improvements, and the Village of Hartsburg, awarded $300,000 for sewer system compliance project.

The Southern Boone varsity scholar bowl team, aka the “Nerd Herd”, traveled to Chicago on the weekend of April 27th for the NAQT Small Schools National Championship tournament. The team posted four wins and six losses in preliminary play, and did not advance to semi-finals.

Partners Dave Westhoff and Bob Black officially opened Boone Corner on Thursday, May 2nd with a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the Southern Boone Chamber of Commerce.
The business center is currently occupied by Domino’s Pizza, Alpha Martial Arts, and Midwest Alarm Security. The last units available are suite B (~900 sq. ft.) and suite c (~1900 sq. ft.).

Bruce Begemann and Tim Hentz
The Village of Hartsburg swore in Tim Hentz and Bruce Begemann to the Board of Trustees on Wednesday, May 1st, 2024. Hentz is now serving his fourth term and Mr. Begemann his fifth.
The board also re-selected Mayor Molendorp as chairman.

Nathaniel Gard, age 26 of Moberly. Arrested by APD on 05/05/2024 for failure-to-appear on a no insurance charge and failure to register vehicle charge.
Olivia Jackson, age 30 of Columbia. Arrested by APD on 04/30/2024 for driving while revoked and an out-of-county warrant for failure-to-appear on a speeding charge.
Brian Short, age 52 of Ashland. Arrested by APD on 05/01/2024 for failure-to-appear on expired plates charge and a failure to wear seatbelt charge.

Continuing the Spiritual Journey

The winds have been strong this spring, breaking off the withered branches from our walnut and sycamore trees and scattering them throughout the yard. Gathering them is a fun chore for our grandchildren. They throw them into the firepit for kindling, and, when the fire is burning exactly right, they put marshmallows on the end of a stick to roast and then eat, licking the sticky sugar off their fingertips. A heavenly treat that brings the little ones much joy!

According to the Columbia Police Department, Allen D. Nichols, 84, of Ashland, was traveling northbound in the southbound lane of Highway 63 near the I-70 Connector on May 3rd around 5:00pm.
Columbia Police, Boone County Sheriff’s Department, and the Missouri Highway Patrol located and attempted to stop Mr. Nichols’ blue 2021 Chevrolet Equinox before it collided with a 2018 Dodge Ram driven by Robert Heckman, 56, of Columbia.
Neither driver was wearing a seatbelt. Mr. Nichols died at the scene due to his injuries sustained during the crash. His next of kin has been notified.
