It seems like everyone is dead, dying, or almost dying around me

These past few weeks have been hard. An old friend of mine’s sister passed away from cancer, a family friend’s daughter has a brain tumor that will kill her in 5-10 years, and I just found out that the old director of a community theatre group that means a lot to me died of a heart attack today. Last year both me and my sister had to get tested for cancer because doctors found tumors in my bones and extra fluid around her ovaries, plus most of my family members have had cancer once or two times, so a lot of this feels very close to home. Thankfully the tumors were benign. Obviously I’m gratefu ..read more

It's been almost a month since my stepmom (my dad's fiancee, never got married officially) passed away.  Things have been tough, but I care more about how my dad is feeling about everything than my own feelings about it. He obviously hasn't been doing okay, but the thing is, I've started feeling more like a non-romantic replacement for my stepmom in his eyes, mainly with how much he vents to me. It isn't that I don't want to be there for him, but I'm 19 years old and I don't feel like I'm in the position to help. He started doing better as time went on, but all of his wounds got reopened ..read more

Recently I got to know my mom is allergic to kiwi. But I got to know about it after something happened to her... It was one sunday afternoon I made a fruit salad with bunch of fruits throwed in together with kiwi.  Although I wanted my mom to try it, she ate a bit of it not too much; just s itsy bitsy bit. I wasn't even aware she had some allergies.  Few minutes later, she asked me whether it had kiwi in it, I responded back with 'yes' she panicked and went into frenzy and started yelling: I wasn't still aware what happened.  Then she finally yelled at me and told me 'I'm allerg ..read more

Lost my Mum on June 3rd, she wasn't there to see my 18th birthday (18th June)

My mum lost her battle with Motor Neurone Disease on the third of June, she never got to see me turn 18. The grief rarely strikes me but when it does I feel frozen cold to my core, the air around me feels freezing and I begin to break down. When this happens I suddenly lose my composure and scream in anguish until I can't anymore, it's just not fair that she never got to see me turn 18 and make a life for myself. Sometimes I'll be listening to music or spending time with family and friends when those cold waves rip through my body and I remember that I never got to say goodbye. It hurts so muc ..read more

I lost my mom 5 years ago. It was a sudden and traumatic death in many ways. My entire childhood she was addicted to various drugs, including heroin which is eventually what killed her. She had gotten clean when I was 11, and managed to stay clean for all of 3 years give or take a few months. No one in my family knew she had started using again and so none of us were prepared for her death. I was 14 at the time and I was there when she passed away. We were in a grocery store and I remember watching her fall over and start turning this blueish gray shade. She was making this snoring noise and n ..read more

Just found out that mums house is going to be sold as there is a buyer and it needs my signature. Both my teenage daughter and myself are taking it very hard as she has lots of there as do I. I don’t know what to do or say to make sure I’m not burdening her or making it worse for her,. All I want to do is cry and she has been bawling her eyes out with it all. a sibling wanted to sell it but we didn’t think that it would have a lot of interest  ..read more

I lost my mother at the age of nine and wrote a book to help other teens grieving the loss of their parent in 2018 called Parental Death: The Ultimate Teen Guide. In the book, I shared resources and support information to help teens try and navigate their loss. I also included voices of teens sharing their story about the death of their parents to help other teens not feel alone.  Currently, I'm writing a second resource to help teens navigate the death of their parents and I'm looking to connect with teens who would like to share their story in my next book.  Please email me at writ ..read more
