Rugby League have followed Union in lowering tackle height, one of 44 measures to be introduced to make the game safer incl. reducing head to head contact. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-league/67658523 no doubt will be a few teething issues as it rolls out but a god thing going forwards ..read more

Without wishing to trigger the grumpy ones (I bet I have failed), who do you think should be in contention / win this award this year? I'm struggling to think of any notable performances this year. World Cups in cricket and rugby were a bit of a damp squib for all home nations. Women's football fell at the last hurdle (probably best bet for a winner). A couple of gold medals at the World Athletics champs (Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Josh Kerr). Three silvers in the World Diving... Read more ..read more

Potential belter of an opening match tonight between France and New Zealand, the best of the northern hemisphere against the best of the southern I reckon (though my money is on South Africa to retain their title). Tricky group for Scotland but I reckon we've got what it takes to get to the quarters ..read more

I'll start by saying I haven't got a TV, that I have no interest in sports which involve a ball and consider rugby loosely contained violence which is far too homoerotic for my tastes. With that out of the way, I'm quite excited for this tournament, it seems pretty open though I suspect the Southern Hemisphere teams will dominate, especially South Africa who I reckon will win. I'm hoping Scotland can continue their consistency in getting to the quarter finals, which is never easy but will... Read more ..read more

The old one seems to have been lost in the corridor of uncertainty. As we speak, the amazing Joe Root has scored another ton which means he has got to at least 50 in his last 11 Tests. Outstanding. Cook has ploughed on to his 31st ton which, whike not being of the same flair, is also amazxing. Let's hope these two stay fit for the Ashes. Albeit that this Windies outfit are not a patch on their teams of old, sadly ..read more

It's long bugged me that there's no thread for, simply, the rugby, in the way that there is for, say, football or cricket. So apologies for the presumption in mooting one, but I honestly couldn't find anywhere to post. And I can't believe I'm the only one who saw Ireland v All Blacks yesterday. I was brooding about this in a back-of-mind sort of way when I came across a post by somone called Unionfan who said so exactly what I felt, and it was so honest and so heartfelt that...
