Tuning pin spacing
Sawmill Creek » Musical Instruments

Hi all. I'm designing an instrument modeled after a clavichord or early square piano. I'm currently trying to decide on the spacing between tuning pins and am wondering if any of you could provide some insight on minimum / ideal spacing. That is, I don't want to place pins too close to each other so that the strength of the wood is compromised, but I want to keep the distance as small as possible because this dimension directly correlates with the overall width of the instrument. I plan on using modern zither pins which require 3/16" holes, and the spacing I'm considering is 1/2" from center ..read more

Thanks to Saw Mill Creek I am slowly learning the language and understanding a little about CNC. So many things for instruments can be done so nicely with CNC. I saw this on Banjo Hangout. It might be of interest to a few Creekers. https://www.banjohangout.org/topic/394800 Screen Shot 2024-01-21 at 5.48.40 AM.jpg Attached Images Screen Shot 2024-01-21 at 5.48.40 AM.jpg (57.3 KB ..read more

Hello: I have in my house: 1. Camelia Oil 2. Pure not boiled linseed oil 3. Pure tung oil 4. Walnut oil 5. Hemp oil Which one can I use to clean and take care of my guitar neck? I know guitarists using camelia oil but it is a non-drying oil. I ask it here because it seems to me the right place considering your knowledge on wood finishing. Thank you, Haitham ..read more

thought I saw a post here about banjos so this makes sense just dont see the post. Also worth noting Rick did a you tube on the way past David Frost interview with Oscar Peterson. I had sent that interview past to a number of people just stunned at his abilities. Bella Fleck interview, only watched a bit so far and usually should watch stuff to the end however. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xNR2VHOzcY ..read more

Hoping to make a bass drum

Skinny Bass.jpgPlanning on making a new type bass drum. 18" diameter, open face, 6" (or so) deep. Going to make it out of lepoardwood (have a bunch of 8/4 and don't like it much). Going to make 3 segmented rings, glue them face to face to make a rough cylinder, and turn it to 18" diameter. I can then turn half the inside thin, reverse it in the chuck and turn the other half of the inside. Buying one is $310 + shipping & tax = $425. I can buy the hardware (sans legs which I will make) for just under $120. Here's the link to the commercial version https://www.sidekickdrums.com/shop/s...m-sin ..read more
