This fishing trip took me to a stream that I have not fished in almost 40 years. One nice thing about fishing during the middle of the week you are almost guaranteed to not run into any people. Once I parked, I immediately headed down to the stream. I was a little worried at first since the stream was a little muddy. Well, Summer must be over, temps have gone down up north, a Chilly 39 this morning , Stocking truck is working again. Went to the creek today, and AZ Griz reported that he saw G&F stocking the creek on Tuesday this week, so I went to try, not to many peaple relize they are stocking again, figured maybe Id Scratch the finger that has been Itching, with some powerbait. It is just amazing how many areas there are to fish in the Mogollon Rim area. This trip I ventured to another new area to try out my fly rod. The morning weather and temperature was perfect with a temperature of 48 degrees. While I was fortunate to catch two rainbow trout with my fly rig, I can't remember how many tree branches I caught. I took my wife and son and one of his friends up to Big Lake on Friday. We rented a pontoon boat for the day from the lakeside store. It was very windy all day and we got skunked. We were trying to fish on the bottom, as the fish are still deep and the lake hasn't turned over yet. The wind was so strong that the anchors wouldn't hold the boat so we tried to just drift with the wind but it moved the boat fast enough that it pulled our baits up off the bottom. Let me start out by saying if you are looking for any fish pictures there are none. I guess it had to happen sooner or later. I started out my day hitting one of the lakes on top of the rim trying to catch a Tiger trout. The weather was very nice especially when compared to the temperatures of the valley. Well, Fellers, since the day was calm, the surf was pretty flat, and most of the tourists have gone home, I figured it would be a good morning to take my badself down to the coast for some fly fishing in the saltwater. I headed back out to the rim area again to see if I could catch another bucket list fish, the Gila Trout. Even though these trout are stocked in this stream and a few lakes it was not very long ago that they were listed as an endangered fish, and you really had no hope catching one. This week I headed to another area of the rim and fished a very small creek not really known for trout fishing. Again because of the time of year the creek is very low and, in some areas, only 1 - 2 feet wide. I ended up fishing up and down the creek for about 5 hours covering 3.5 miles. I was very fortunate to catch and release my target fish, a wild Brook Trout and a couple of small Brown Trout. I did have a couple more trout hooked up, but they shook the lure off.
