Split cane fly rods

I have a split cane fly rod that I received as a gift over 60 years ago. Like new, in its original case. I long ago figured that, with composite materials being the favored material, split cane rods were a thing of the past. Yesterday I was at a 'craft fair' at this RV park, and seeing the tips of rods was the long-time magnet. When I got to the booth, the guy was selling only split cane rods, really nice ones (nice $$$$ prices). Talking with the guy, he buys cane blanks from China and... Read more ..read more

As a teenager, I enjoyed fishing while camping. If there were fish in the water I could catch them. I caught a near-record bass in a closed canal. I caught a flounder rolled up in a crab trap. Now retired, I planned on spending time throwing a line in, but in a complete reversal, the only thing I catch now is a cold. Interesting. I am happy to say that the waterways are considerably cleaner now compared to the 1960's ..read more

Growing up we'd always considered Buffalo to be a trash fish, but I'm now hearing they're quite good to eat when properly prepared. I noticed too, that if I approached quietly I could get right on top of them without spooking them off. On that note, I've procured a telescoping gig and the... Read more ..read more
