Despite the public transportation strikes turning Helsinki’s center into a ghost town on February 2nd, 2024, the anticipation for the triple treat of SELF DECEPTION, ONE MORNING LEFT, and DEAD BY APRIL at Tavastia stage drew a massive crowd. The line to enter wrapped around the block, but everyone got inside really fast after the door were opened. Despite concerns about the strikes affecting the show, the event went on without a hitch. The venue was packed well before the first notes echoed through the air. Kicking off the night was SELF DECEPTION. This was my first experience witnessing their ..read more

On February 2nd, 2024, the Tekkno World 2024 Tour arrived in Berlin. German fun metalcore band ELECTRIC CALLBOY, along with American rock metal band NOTHING MORE and Japanese alternative project SiM, stormed the home arena, Velodrom. The arena was sold out, with about 12,000 people attending. Berlin was the first city on the tour, and its residents stood in major queues outside, preparing for the evening. The opening act was SiM (SILENCE IZ MINE) from Japan. Their music is a mix, ranging from metal to punk to ska and even pushing into reggae. All band members were energetic and dynamic, and fe ..read more

REVIEW: Infected Rain – Time
Tuonela Magazine » Metalcore
by Andrea C.

Groovy riffs, metalcore breakdowns, nu-metal elements, and versatile vocals that range from melodic and ethereal all the way to deep growls and screams have made INFECTED RAIN a force to be reckoned with in the metal scene. With so much going on, their music is not easy to label falling somewhere between metalcore, groove metal, and modern metal though the consensus is that it slaps. Their latest album, “Time,” was released on February 9th, 2024, via Napalm Records and it showcases the (now) four-piece Moldovan band in splendid form. Musically, this is a rather heavy affair with an intricate ..read more

I kicked off my music photography journey for the year in the familiar and vibrant atmosphere of On the Rocks, Helsinki, where ANYALA and IN MOURNING were set to play on January 4th, 2024. The evening kicked off with a powerful performance by the Lahti-based band ANYALA. Despite a slight unease in their stage presence and vocals, the overall energy they brought to the stage was undeniable, leaving the audience thoroughly entertained. The much-anticipated headliner, IN MOURNING, the melodic death metal act from Sweden, took the stage later in the evening, fulfilling the expectations of many in ..read more

On January 13th, 2023, ARCHITECTS with NORTHLANE hit Verti Music Hall in Berlin as part of their German Tour.  NORTHLANE came from far-away Australia to treat the German crowd to a show. Those who have not yet heard NORTHLANE‘s “Obsidian” album may be fooled into thinking the opening song, “Clarity,” was a 4 a.m. ’90s rave wind-down mix. The intro smashed the audience in the face with Marcus Bridges screaming, “you’re killing me!” The green laser lights were hectic and cutting into the dark of the crowd, and as the drums relentlessly throbbed, then came ..read more

REVIEW: Architects – the classic symptoms of a broken spirit
Tuonela Magazine » Metalcore
by Jani L.

Following the critically acclaimed, mostly remotely conjured 2021 album, “For Those That Wish to Exist,” the UK metalcore bunch, ARCHITECTS, released their tenth studio album “the classic symptoms of a broken spirit” just now, on October 21st, 2022, via Epitaph. Staying true to their shapeshifting inner spirit, the new album finds the band continuing to refine their sound by reaching further into the industrial and electronic realms. The shadow of BRING ME THE HORIZON is, obviously, rather strong with this effort, but there are a whole bunch of other delicious nuances as well, ranging from the ..read more

REVIEW: I Am Your God – SINister

The city of Rovaniemi is not just home to Santa Claus and his busy workshop, but also to Finnish up-and-coming metalcore/melodic death metal band, I AM YOUR GOD. The quintet released their debut album, “The Resurrection,” in October 2020, only 2 months after signing a deal with German record label Out of Line Music. A couple of singles later, the band is eager to release their sophomore studio effort, titled “SINister,” on May 5th, 2023, again through Out of Line Music. I was fairly impressed by I AM YOUR GOD’s previous effort, so when the opportunity to review new material from them presente ..read more

Eurovision may not have deemed German metalcore legends ELECTRIC CALLBOY‘s highly addictive “Pump It” worthy, but the metal scene knows a lot better than some of those critiques. In just a matter of years, the German band managed to completely take over the scene, so after the release of their latest album, “Tekkno,” they were bound to head on a European tour. Thankfully, the band had scheduled two (sold-out) shows at Vanha Ylioppilastalo in Helsinki. We were there to join the party on March 26th, 2023. Future Palace ..read more

REVIEW: In Flames – Foregone

If ever there was a band to endure, IN FLAMES would hold the title. Having started as a harsh and growling Gothenburg entity in the ’90s, to adding more melodic elements in the ’00s, and the modern era that’s taken inspiration from lighter, poppier styles as well, it should come as no surprise that this band’s fanbase has been in constant flux. With this all in mind, the announcement of “Foregone,” the band re-signing with Nuclear Blast Records, and the steady stream of surprisingly heavy singles have resulted in deep curiosity regarding this new release – will they sound like their old selves ..read more

REVIEW: No Kings – EP: The Remedy
Tuonela Magazine » Metalcore
by Guest Contributor

Sometimes you just have to leave the past behind to make a clean start and this life truth can refer to one’s music career as well. The Californian band NO KINGS surely know it. The group was formed after the dissolution of two previous projects: THE CROWN REMNANT and INTERNET NOISE. It was clear right from the start that NO KINGS were meant to be something bigger. Vocalist Geordy Shallan joined forces with guitarists Joseph Camacho and Vincent Gutierrez, bassist Syd Drapkin, and drummer Art Ramirez; this collaboration resulted in an independent release of “The Remedy” EP on September 30th, 20 ..read more
