Eden Rain – “Palo Alto” -This is a song about the lingering influence of a relationship. It’s about ruining someone’s peace intentionally because they did the same to you. It’s a piano pop song that absolutely will steal your heart and your attention. The more I explored Eden Rain, the more captivated I was by the song and its energy. There’s a cathartic, almost celebratory sense to the track despite it being a breakup track. The vibes are impeccable and the lead vocal is outstanding. It’s a good tune that doesn’t really fit genre conventions, but I’m certainly happy to support it here ..read more

Wax Owls – “Freckle” -If you’ve been around my folk music coverage for any length of time, this sound is probably familiar to you. It’s a folksy energy with a good guitar and an outstanding vocal; that’s something I’m always happy to support. This track has a clarity to it that stands out from a production stand point right away. But you know what makes this song go from good to great? The VOCAL HARMONIES! Oh my heavens. The lyrics have a nice mix of abstract and down to earth, allowing the listener to find a connection. It’s a good tune with some outstanding harmonies that keep me clicking fo ..read more

Featured Single: Juliana Madrid’s new track “Heathen” is an immediate standout track

Juliana Madrid – “Heathen” -I’m surely not the first person to compare Juliana Madrid’s style to Maggie Rogers; I mean it’s right there from the inflection and even the melody choices. There’s a clear influence from the Lilith Fair Tour artists and this emotive, rock-folk vibe. It works really well. Madrid’s lyrical style has a brilliant combination of approachable familiarity combined with a deep, almost philosophical nuance to it. It’s about infidelity, what could have been, and what could never be. The thoughtful reflection blends well with the indie pop influenced vibe of the track. This i ..read more

Three outstanding new indie pop tracks at the intersection of pop and folk music

Sixten – “Living Comes With Dying” -This might seem like a melancholy song at first listen, but trust me when I say there’s a lot of good vibes at the heart of it. While the focus is ostensibly on dying, the main message of the song is an encouragement to really live life. As someone in a stage of “middle age,” this song resonates in ways that I struggle to put into words. I appreciate the atmospheric indie pop elements as they dance delightfully with the folksy storytelling; once the full band and vocal harmonies enter on the chorus, this song goes from good to great. It’s a wonderful work of ..read more

3 New Artists to Soundtrack Your Weekend

Annie Bacon & Her Oshen – “Mist” This one has strong Jason Isbell vibes. The way she croons and builds introspective lyrical structures, is similar to Isbell with shades of Stevie Nicks as well. The Americana infused rock definitely will play with much of our audience. Her newest LP Storm has just released and is full of the tight storytelling she is rapidly becoming known for. “Mist” is a meditation on the existential and asks “what are we looking for?” amidst a classic Americana sound. Listeners will enjoy exploring her entire catalogue. Leyya – “Ease My Mind” We like the slow burning q ..read more

Luke Lasso – “The Way Things Go” -This songs absolutely slaps. I have a 100% result of chair dancing when I listen to this song. It’s got a great groove, impressive vocal performance, and a vibe that is immaculate. I’m not even sure what genre to call it; I guess it’s a danceable indie pop track. But the thing that makes the song work for me is the balance between the dance groove with an accessible, inviting vocal melody. Lyrically, it’s about taking life easy, “it’s alright… it’s the way things go.” Yes. I need this track in my life right in this moment. Spin it, friends. This is a great tun ..read more

Laken Campo – “Ghost” -From the first line of this song about a poltergeist, I was taken by this track. There’s a clarity in the vocal that is quite appealing. The overall energy of the song feels like the idyllic blend of folk guitar, pop vocals, and a production style that is just… *chef’s kiss*. I could listen to this type of music all day long. In fact, some days I do. I love the positive vibes on the chorus with the group vocal and optimistic chord choices. This song is a whole experience. Fans of artists like Dodie Clark and Lizzy McAlpine are going to find a LOT to enjoy about this trac ..read more

Caleb Hearn – “Klonopin” -It’s not every day that I run across that stops me in my tracks. From first listen I knew there was something different about this artist. The acoustic energy in the opening turns into a captivating genre-bending sound. The key lyric, “I need you like water” absolutely soars here. The production is next level on this fascinating track. In some ways, it almost feels like a worship song in the structure and style. That said, there’s a romantic, soulful, yet philosophical focus to the song that makes it feel outstanding. It’s well worth your time to give it a listen. Da ..read more

Beth Torrance Shares “Tiny Flowers” for our Broken Hearts

Beth Torrance – “Tiny Flowers” The ’90’s acoustic on this one is reminiscent of some of our favorite singer songwriters. The way Torrance plays is absolutely captivating, with every strum striking tiny deathblows to our heart. Vocally, her delivery is incredible, emotive, and rare. Yet, her talent for crafting lyrics is surpassed by very few of her contemporaries and is what sets her apart. Her ability to weave a story reminds us of Elliot Smith and captures the artist’s ability to stun in a short two and a half minute sonic frame. With all this said, we find it difficult to adequately describ ..read more

Rose Brokenshire: An Incredible Talent and Voice

Rose Brokenshire – “Type Two” We love the smoky lounge sway on this one. Rose Brokenshire has been one of our favorite musical discoveries the past few months and continues only to get better. “Type Two” has a different feel to it and is a pace slower, almost hypnotic, then some of her other releases. We comment a lot on how much we love her vocal delivery, but we could honestly listen to her croon for days. It is a relaxing and disarming delivery we find extremely rare. Perhaps what we love most, is the artist’s authenticity and earnest songwriting. We cannot recommend her enough for those of ..read more
