Longmont Locals: Scythe (/saɪð/) Robotics

You know… like the tool (a scythe is basically a long handle with a curved blade at the end). Scythes were like the very first lawn mower. You swing that curved blade parallel to the earth, and voila, grass haircut. Scythes dominated for THOUSANDS of years. Then I guess at some point this really grim dude stole all of them and we had to start making ACTUAL lawnmowers. I don’t know how it all went down, but I guess Edwin Beard Budding got involved. But time is a flat circle or something, because here we are in the 21st century, and buddy, a Scythe (/saɪð/) is once again the very, uh, cutting ed ..read more

BUZZCUT
SideDish Longmont
by Brady Steffl and Annie Larner
2w ago
We're attempting a portmanteau, you know, where you smash a couple of words together. What do you think? The idea is that we take “buzz,” like our buzz around town, and then we pair it with “cut,” because we’ve cut out the buzz and it is now a standalone episode for your enjoyment. That’s right, this is just buzz  - no interview. And we think BUZZCUT is very appropriate because our special guest this week is Allison McIntosh from Scythe Robotics - a Longmont company that makes some extremely high tech, automated mowers. So yeah, what do you think? Good name? Maybe it sucks and Brady is ju ..read more

From The Basement
SideDish Longmont
by Brady Steffl and Annie Larner

Today we’re joined by the upstairs neighbors! Or, maybe they’re like the landlords or something? Whatever, I’ll think about it. Anyway, if you don’t know, we record every (other) week (or so) from the basement of Longmont Public Media. And before we skulk off to the cellar (where the podcast studio lives) we often bump into Sergio Angeles and/or Nathan Venzara - who are the Executive Director and Executive Producer respectively. Today, these two join us to talk about LPM and what a unique gem it really is. Oh! Maybe they’re the Eloi and we’re the Morlocks? Is that too forced… or just too esote ..read more

Body Service?
SideDish Longmont
by Brady Steffl and Annie Larner
1M ago
Is that what we’ve come to? I mean, it’s just the two of us, hanging out in a basement… talking about body service? I guess so, Yeah. But, where else are you going to get updates on Winchell’s? And yeah, there’s actually news on Winchell’s. Real news. Hand on heart. Actually, there’s kind of a lot of news. We can even report that Longmont’s version of Old Faithful has gone off this year. What does that even mean, you ask? Well, it’s a good question. Another good question is, “Why the hell did Brady put so many question marks into this writeup?” Well? I mean, some of them aren’t even questions ..read more

A Certain Vintage
SideDish Longmont
by Brady Steffl and Annie Larner
2M ago
Wait, vintage? Are we talking about wine, reading glasses… or about some kinda neo-retro fashion? All of it (obviously) plus a lot of coffee talk. Weird mix, you say? Well, todays’ guest, Emily Luebcke, can sum it up in two words, “Juniper Goods.” Juniper Goods is her soon-to-open clothing boutique / coffee shop / wine bar / community space. Yeah, it’s going to be all of those things. We thought it sounded like a lot, too, but now that I’ve heard her vision it sounds awesome. You can hear it, too, right now! Here is referenced episode on Johnson's Station: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/sh ..read more

Lance Cayko: F9 and Longmont's Attainable Parking Problem
SideDish Longmont
by Brady Steffl and Annie Larner

Lance is the owner and co-founder of many "F" keys - some you may recognize from your home computer. Most notably, this includes F9 which also happens to be his architecture firm with a focus on sustainable living, which is he started right here in Longmont. Lance also claims multiple pages of Google results, though we forgot to ask how many of those he owns or founded. On top of that, he runs a successful podcast about architecture. Honestly, we could use some tips on creating a "successful" podcast ourselves. But he's an absolute force of nature with a passion for our fair city. Oh! Also, An ..read more

Johnson's Station (Not Gas)
SideDish Longmont
by Brady Steffl and Annie Larner

Today we are joined by Giovanni Leone and Zach Nassar, a couple of the main players in Johnson's Station, a COMPLETE renovation and repurposing of that crazy old gas station in Prospect. This one almost feels like some kind of SEO effort... in addition to Prospect, we talk rooftop bars, pickleball, outdoor drinks, and summer concerts. We also speculate as to why Jack Kerouac needed a nap when he passed through the area. Nothing untoward, surely. Thanks to Ady Eppler and David Cutter Music for our intro and outtro music ..read more
