More Americans are defaulting on their car loans due to larger loan amounts, high interest rates, increased living costs and more.
The number of borrowers who fell more than 90 days behind on their auto loans rose to 2.66% in the fourth quarter of 2023 — a nearly 20% increase from the same time last year, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
Why are more people defaulting on car loans?
Borrowers are struggling in part due to sky-high interest rates and increased expenses that have made it difficult for many to be current on their loans, acc ..read more

Six years ago, automakers and tech companies thought they were on the cusp of putting thousands of self-driving robotaxis on the street to carry passengers without a human driver.
Then an Uber autonomous test vehicle hit and killed a pedestrian in Arizona, multiple problems arose with Tesla’s partially automated systems, and General Motors’ Cruise robotaxis ran into trouble in San Francisco.
Yet the technology is moving ahead, says Amnon Shashua, co-founder and CEO of Mobileye, an Israeli public company majority owned by Intel that has pioneered partially ..read more

General Motors, Ford and Tesla have all warned of an electric vehicle slowdown because they say demand might drop.
Auto makers mainly say higher borrowing costs are the issue but some car dealerships say EVs are sitting longer than regular cars. They say consumers are concerned about the range of EVs and lack of infrastructure.
In a Cox Automotive survey, 53 percent of consumers said EVs will eventually replace internal combustion engines, but less than a third of dealers agreed. Several dealerships interviewed by CNBC said EVs wer ..read more

“Sheer panic.” That’s what Teddy Mars of Louisiana felt when his homeowners insurance company didn’t renew his policy in early 2023. The last remaining option left him and his family paying more for homeowners insurance than their mortgage.
To cover costs, Mars had to dip into his nest egg and withdraw $12,000 from his individual retirement account. “We’re not sitting on a huge mountain of cash here,” Mars says. And opting out of insurance isn’t an option when you have a mortgage.
“It’ll break my heart, but I think we’re going to have to leave,” says Mars, who grew u ..read more

Buying a car in the current auto market remains more difficult and expensive than it was pre-pandemic. Although some aspects of the industry are beginning to recover, sky-high car prices and soaring interest rates persist.
Within this still turbulent market, buying a car can be even more challenging for minority consumers due to discriminatory practices that have plagued the car industry historically and continue to affect buyers.
For example, the 2021 Racial Discrimination in the Auto Loan Market report from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) showed ..read more

We see them every day and every vehicle has one. Today we have a little news and history about license plates.
People drive the most miles in the summer months so here’s a few things to consider while rolling down the road.
When the Department of Motor Vehicles began in 1915, gas was 8 cents a gallon and a new car cost about $500. If you think the lines are long now, the first DMV office had two employees and registration fees were $2.
In 1901, the state of New York was the first to require all vehicles to be registered and have license plates. The California Secretary of State’s Office began ..read more

If you get the sense you’ve been seeing more bad accidents on the road lately, you probably have. Crashes claimed an estimated 42,795 lives on U.S. roadways in 2022, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a fairly dramatic increase over 2019 by more than 6,000 deaths.
Though traffic on U.S. roadways plummeted in the first year of the pandemic, roadway deaths did the opposite. Traffic fatalities experienced double-digit growth four quarters in a row beginning in the second half of 2020.
And death rates haven’t really improved since then. “Driving is back up alm ..read more
