FLAC After years of self-releasing albums on his own Saturn label, Sun Ra signed with ABC’s Impulse jazz imprint in 1972. A reissue series of earlier hard-to-find Saturn LPs was undertaken, along with a few new projects. The first premiere, Astro Black, was recorded and released in 1973 in the now-obsolete quadraphonic format (tho it was playable on stereo phonographs). The undertaking signaled a noble campaign on the part of Impulse producer Ed Michel to mainstream Sun Ra and broaden his audience, without any sacrifice of artistic integrity. But the effort was doomed: the label suffered comme ..read more

320 | FLAC   Most 81 year old blokes would be happy pottering round the garden, or playing bowls, but not so Hawkwind survivor Dave Brock who is still leading the world’s greatest space rockers over five decades after they formed. As the only original member left, not only is Brock the mastermind behind all their new material, but the veteran guitarist still tours regularly with his new bandmates who are all considerably younger. This double album is a collection of the best tracks from their gigs last year, including an unlikely date at the London Palladium. Most people are familiar with ..read more

320 | FLAC   The Space Box contains 3 discs of prog rock and art rock, as well as trance-inducing Kraut rock, from the early ’70s. Even though the set is well compiled and contains some fine songs (Faust and Gong sound particularly good), there’s no ..read more
