I am proud to say that my painting of the Ten Bells is part of the Town House Open exhibition currently on at Town House Spitalfields, 5 Fournier Street, London E1. Part I of the exhibition consists of paintings and is on until 28 July. Part II will consist of original prints, mixed media and watercolours and will run from 31 August until 22 September. Ceramics and sculptures will be on display for the whole time. Around 100 talented artists will exhibit their work at the Town House Open over both parts and there are lots of different styles and genres to enjoy. I may be biased, but it is an ..read more

Today is sadly the last day of Doreen's superb exhibition 'East' which is on at Townhouse Spitalfields, 5 Fournier Street, London E1. This is the fifth time Doreen has exhibited at Townhouse, her first exhibition being 'Lost Time' in 2016. Doreen is passionate about painting 'the almost gone' and has always shown concern for her immediate external environment and the traces left by people on the surface of things in both cities and landscapes (both urban and rural). The gallery where Doreen's work is displayed looks like it may have caught measles as it is covered in red dots! Not only is Do ..read more

I am happy to say that my painting of The Ten Bells will be included in part one of the Town House Open 2024 exhibition which will run from 6th to 28th July. I am proud to have my work displayed alongside other talented artists and highly recommend a visit (the coffee and home made cakes are splendid!). In the past I have concentrated on painting old London buildings because I am interested in their design and history, especially in the Spitalfields and East End areas of London. I am interested in capturing the transformation of London’s urban landscape and remembering its links with the pa ..read more

I started painting in 2016 and joined a local art class at at Barleylands Craft Village (not far from Billericay), the venue being an art shop and studio called ‘Dean Smith’s Art’. When you walk through the front door you immediately realise that the owner, Dean, loves The Beatles, Elvis and The Jam. The walls and ceiling are decorated with colourful artwork and memorabilia that features these famous musicians and most of the tea/coffee is served in a similarly themed mug! Dean and his teacher colleague Jennie, are very friendly, welcoming and their enthusiasm for art is infectious. There is ..read more

My artistic journey

I have always loved art. I have memories of scribbling random drawings on paper in my parents kitchen when I was tiny and at junior school I remember giving a boy called Peter a picture of a horse I drew that he liked. My Mum went food shopping on a Saturday and dropped myself and my brother off at a place called the Blue House where we attended the 'Chaos Club', it was 10p to get in and there would be various activities: films, dancing, talent shows and my favourite...drawing! I used to draw Victorian shoes and dresses that had fancy bows and fastenings and create scrapbooks with them. My O ..read more

I love painting historic London architecture and usually choose buildings that are in the East End of London and Spitalfields because I have a personal and sentimental connection to them. My family is originally from Custom House, Limehouse and Balham (not the East End I know!) and I have friends I am very fond of who live and work in the Spitalfields area, so I have an emotional connection when painting pictures from these areas. I have worked in the City of London my whole working life and recently thought why have I never painted scenes from this area? I am interested in old London building ..read more
