Auckland’s The Beths has just released their new single Watching The Credits which was recorded during the sessions for the band’s last album Expert In A Dying Field. The band write that the song “was born out of songwriter Elizabeth Stokes’ habit of learning everything about movies without actually watching them. She now understands this fascination with another creative medium was an escape from music, which had become her job and existential.”
I am not sure why Watching The Credits didn’t make the cut because it’s a sparkling power pop gem and would have made a worthy entry. Maybe on the 1 ..read more

Cable Ties release their new and third album All Her Plans towards the end of June 2023. The Melbourne based outfit have also just released the second single to be taken from said album in the shape of Time For You. Fusing genres ranging from heavy metal to riot-grrrl and coupled with shouty punk vocals, it’s a rip roaring effort thanks to the Angus Young inspired guitar riffs. Power-pop at it’s finest.
All Her Plans will be released on June 23 2023. Pre-order it from Merge Records (US) or Poison City Records (Aus)

Onwards and Upwards is the debut single from the Hollywood based Londoner Billy Tibbals. You cannot get a more “alright” name than that eh? The song itself is a very entertaining mix of glam, pub rock, new wave power pop and some good old fashioned rock and roll. It’s all very 1970’s and not only do they sound the part they look it too as the gig footage testifies. A right ol’ blast!
Onwards and Upwards is backed by Lucy and will be released by the Los Angeles based label Curation Records in vinyl and digital formats on 30 December 2022. It can be pre-ordered from here ..read more

Rangiora’s Best Bets revisit April’s debut album On An Unhistoric Night for their latest single the Minor Leagues. It’s an edited version of the original track shaving well over a minute from the album version making more effective and accessible as a single to these ears. Fusing garage, jangle and power pop it reminds me of “new wave”, the music that followed punk in the UK in the late 1970s, early 1980s. Yep, I remember it well! It’s backed with the original version and a new track, the melodic and ear grabbing Big Time which ironically is way too short! Get the single from here.

Bloody Knuckles is the third single to be taken from the forthcoming latest album from New York’s Petite League titled Thrill Seekers. It’s a fuzzy, noisy and, many at times throughout, pretty disordered lo-fi alt-rock song. Lorenzo Gillis-Cook’s voice also reminds me of the vocals that were pretty frequent on late 70s new wave/power pop singles and here they sound like a cross between Pete Shelly and Jilted John!
If you missed them note that the previous two singles were Floating Blue and July’s excellent Pantone Karaoke.
Thrill Seekers is out on October 21 2022 via Zap World Records. Pre-or ..read more

The Crystal Furs & Pennywhistle Park cover each others songs on this new 7″ from the new label Emperial Sugar Records.
The former covers Dashboard, which was originally found on the latter’s 2001 album The Build-Up for the Big Let Down. The favour is returned with a cover of Like You which appeared on The Crystal Furs 2020 long player Beautiful and True. The latter’s version, which is their first recorded output for two decades, just edges it for me but both acts make the respective songs their own.
Buy it on 7″ from the label or pick the tracks up from the respective acts Bandcamp pages ..read more
