The news in the world has been heavy to say the least. I know it’s weighed on me this last week. One of my favorite escapes has been music, so I keep chugging along trying to share new tunes that can hopefully bring everyone a bit of respite from the rest of the universe that we can’t control. Here’s hoping some of the great new albums and songs that came out this week can be one escape from you. And this week’s albums are a solid collection. We have the long-awaited return of Los Campesinos!, Glass Animals‘ latest after their break-through album, a cool soundtrack-accompaniment from Childish ..read more

World Watch: Laurent

Country: France French songwriter Laurent may look like a serious figure in the picture above, but the music he composes is youthful, vibrant and full of the spirited fun of old school rock n’ roll. On his debut single, “Dans Mon Coeur (quelques chansons)”, you might think you’re listening to a lost Beatles outtake, minus the French lyrics. Joyous, multi-part harmonies, backing “bah bah bahs”, jangly guitars and piano the ranges from rambunctious to classical, all join together for a wonderful classic power pop arrangement. It’s the kind of song you wouldn’t be surprised to hear in a Wes Ande ..read more

Live Report: Buzzcocks and Modern English at Teragram Ballroom (March 13, 2024)

With a bill consisting of a famed 1970’s punk band and the creators of one of the best songs of the 1980s, I was curious to see what kind of audience would be at the Teragram Ballroom last Wednesday night. Would it be crusty old punks? Remnants of the guy-liner generation? Gen X nostalgists? It was all of those and more as Britain’s Buzzcocks and Modern English came to Los Angeles for a night of old hits and new material. Mohawks, denim jackets, mod hats mingled with the typical jeans and t-shirts crowd for a truly BUZZworthy evening of music. Opening the night were some local heroes, The Re ..read more

New ska-punks Eevie Echoes and the Locations have their debut album out today, and we’ve got an EP from singer-songwriter Michael Isaak. Where to even start with the awesome singles out this week??? The Black Keys have a new banger to preview their next album. Pete Yorn brings new folk rock goodness, while Sea Girls and Giant Rooks cont ..read more

It’s End of Year list time. A time for reflection on the year past, and for arbitrary ranking of things we liked from the last 365 days. And while most lists focus on full albums and songs (which we will of course do too), I feel that EPs, which have proliferated in the streaming era, should not be overlooked. Below are The Indy Review’s Top EPs of 2023 (technically, Dec 2022 – Nov 2023, as we post in December). Hopefully you’ll give these wonderful short form collections a listen! Adult Leisure – The Weekend Ritual It’s releases like this that make me include the December releases from th ..read more

Hope all of you in the United States had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Personally, I’m thankful this year is wrapping up, with just a few more weeks of new releases to consume before everything becomes “holiday music” till 2024. But until that time hits, we’re still going to bring you some of the most noteworthy new releases hitting the market. I bet Guided by Voices don’t even know how many albums they’ve released now, but the productive indie rockers have just dropped another one we’ve got for you. We also want to highlight the new album from Frank Turner‘s band The Sleeping Souls (sans Mr. Tur ..read more
