Dead Relatives began as a web mag for artistic conversations in 2021. After our first year of publication, we started hosting semi-public parties & galleries involving Orange Amps, 22 West, UCLA Radio, & Audio-Technica. During this time, we built the infrastructure intended to carry our original concept for the mag – our turn to print is live now.

The Family Portrait is about my mom, & most of the stuff I went through as a kid. There are side stories to each song, but at its core, this record’s about my mom. I miss her and I love her. This is one of the photos I have of her (cover centerpiece). I have two photos in total.

I’m a photographer and I’ve been taking Polaroids of my friends for the past six, seven years. I didn’t know what to do with them for the longest time until I was trying to think of artwork for this ..read more

We played our first show in Riverside on New Year’s, & ever since then the IE’s been rocking with us heavy. But it’s hard to get that kind of energy out here.

The LA scene is like a too-cool-for-school rat race. Everything’s gotta be presented on a silver platter. When something comes out, it’s like ‘Alright, here’s a tape, here’s some really nice album artwork, here’s a shirt to go with it…’ That’s what it takes to get a ..read more

Quiet Fear is: Christopher Tortoledo on guitar, Adrian Saul Ayala on bass, Cristien Fernandez on drums, & Jonathan Patino on vox.
CT: Speaking for Jonathan and myself, we grew up in the East LA, Boyle Heights area. We were heavily influenced by Chicano culture growing up, but when listening to our favorite bands, we noticed we weren’t really represented as people – like man, why do we love these bands so much, and yet there’s none of us in there?
For anyone that’s trying to do what we’re trying to do from our background, you kind of have to work ..read more

My great-grandfather walked here. He came from a family of 15; a couple wars broke out after the Mexican Revolution & he just walked here as a teenager.
Even though it was political in nature, I don’t think it was political in his mind. He was just doing what was right for him personally. & by extension, his children. Look at me now, man. I’m out here in LA, under the sun. I mean, there’s no such thing as utopia, but I have to feel a sense of gratitude. Through his efforts, I made it simply by stepping on the land thousands are trying to reach. I try not to think about it too hard ‘cau ..read more

None of us come from a place of privilege.
It wasn’t an easy thing for our parents, especially when we were teenagers, to just give us money to go do music or support us. They didn’t have money like that either. So even though it’s me on stage, I wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t for my mother’s sacrifice & support. We didn’t have much growing up, but she always gave me the freedom to do this.
You can get booked for a bomb-ass show, say it’s on Friday or a weekday: you’re getting off of work & there’s so much shit in your way. You show up late & the promoter, who probably doesn’t work ..read more

Oh, is that why I have a stomachache?

I moved to MV in high school & met these three shortly after. We became friends & started jamming on songs I’d been writing. Over time, the group formed naturally.

The new EP reminds me of a Post-Hardcore Siamese Dream.
I like that! I was listening to a lot of Smashing Pumpkins when writing those songs, but I feel like a lot of other bands we listen to started branching from that sound as well. Spencer (co-vocalist/guitarist) put us on to a lot of deep-cut emo, so I feel like that’s where we’re at right now. I like current bands too, but I feel like there’s more star power in the 90’s.
I sat down with Brendan Dyer, guitarist & songwriter from MILLY, in the lounge above El Cid after his set. He started telling me how their drummer Zach Capitti had mov ..read more
