What does Kadum sound like? Brazilian producer focusing on beats, percussion and ancestral and regional sounds. The review of ‘Charango Adventures’ by Kadum Kadum hails from the increasing pantheon of South American producers and artists who mix together the electronic and traditional. On Kadum’s new release, ‘Charango Adventures’ we are invited to enjoy influences and sounds from Andean culture. Each release brings a new sound and Kadum embraces these new sounds with gusto. Kurt Adam – Ardica Review

What does Kurt Adam sound like? A minimalist mixture of electric grooves and traditional instruments. Kurt Adam – Ardica Review Kurt Adam found himself inspired by both time and place for his new EP ‘Ardica’. The Turkish oasis town of Kanadere used to be surrounded by apricot trees and fragrant flowers according to its history. Locals would refer to Ardic, a single old tree as the source of all the abundance. Kurt clearly tapped into this idea with ‘Ardica’, mixing old Turkish motifs with modern-day beats and synths to create a celebratory dance for this story. Kurt Adam – Ardica It is Frankfu ..read more

Introducing… Nosaj Thing
Higher Plain Music » Downtempo

LA Producer Nosaj Thing is returning with his fifth album “Continua” and to celebrate that he has collaborated with Juliana Barwick on the new single “Blue Hour”. It isn’t the first time the two have worked together. Juliette appeared on his 2021 album “Healing is a Miricle”. For me, “Blue Hour” gives me heavy Massive Attack “Teardrop” vibes but with a softer vocal delivery and a focus on tape-warbled synths. The whole track is an absolute gem from start to end. It is so understated throughout that it ends up being quietly devastating. Everything from the vocals to the synths, the heartbeat ki ..read more

Medicine music electronic pioneer Mose has shared a special live concert recorded in Mexico City. The full nearly 2-hour set has the Guatemalan producer joined on stage by special guests from Luna Santa, Onanya and Brenda McMarrow. Amazingly, this set is part improvisation but you’d never know it. The downtempo electronica, traditional instrumentation and chanting work seamlessly to create an uplifting and intimate vibe. Prior to the set, there was a cocoa ceremony which no doubt got everyone in the mood for dancing like your spirit depends on it. Enjoy the sublime set below. For more info on ..read more

Kalya Scintilla – Mumijo Review

What does Kalya Scintilla sound like? Bringing tribal rhythms and ancient instruments into a deep house and downtempo setting. The review of Kalya Scintilla – Mumijo I’ve long been a fan of the bass-heavy approach to tribal electronica that Kalya Scintilla embodies. His tracks are usually a mixture of traditional instruments or synthesised traditional instruments jamming to live and digital beats. Each album always has its own vibe but they straddle new age, electronica and world music in a unique way. With ‘Mumijo’, Kalya returns with another slice of premium music and whilst the result is up ..read more

Dr7 – Signposting Directions for Fish Review
Higher Plain Music » Downtempo

Sounds like… Numbing downtempo riffs for lost days. The review Downtempo artist Graham Hawkins aka Doctor 7 (or dr7) often puts out music that flits around different types of electronic downtempo music. Some of it is more hip-hop based, others are jazzier or Detroit themed. “Signposting Directions for Fish” was created during lockdown and straddles both of those ideas with a heavy new age spin on things. dr7 has made his water album and it is a great relaxing vibe. dr7 “You just name it” opens the album with double bass, Bangla drums and new age synths effortlessly gliding around the speakers ..read more

Hugo Kant – The Seven Seas Review

What does Hugo Kant sound like? Downtempo trip-hop artist who makes stories from samples from around the world. The review of Hugo Kant – The Seven Seas I stumbled across ‘The Seven Seas’ last month and whilst the album came out in 2020, I felt like it could have been released last month too. It’s a superb concept album from Hugo Kant, a musician and producer who specialises in a mixture of downtempo and trip-hop beats with jazzy instruments and real-world samples. For ‘The Seven Seas’ the album takes a selection of spoken word pieces from ‘The Outlaw Ocean’ by Ian Urbina. It’s structured in a ..read more

El Búho – Tón Tón Review

What does El Búho sound like? Usually creating Latin American grooves, this release takes on a Dominican and Jamaican beat. The review of El Búho – Tón Tón After the excellent Natura Sonora, El Búho returns with a new direction on his latest EP ‘Tón Tón’. This release is inspired by Dembow, a type of music that originates from the Jamaican dancehall. It has that riddim that has a skip in its step and hit the global ears in the 90s with Shabba Ranks. Taking that riddim, El Búho brings along his signature organic and acoustic instruments to give the groove a totally differ ..read more
