Mystical Soft Eyes in the realm of Ba’al!

I vaguely remember Ba’al‘s Ellipsism floating by on the now-defunct Clobber Records in 2020. But – sadly – the time wasn’t right for their enigmatic wares four years back and we gave the record a pass. And, perhaps, we shouldn’t have done that. But then, hindsight is always 20/20, right? So, the other day, the RMR Deck Crew got ahold of the band’s new EP Soft Eyes. Especially Ba’al‘s insistence on Blackened Post Metal and visions of those funky wares on offer these days got our curiosity going. Well, Ba’al‘s style is still as enigmatic as … [...] Click to raid more! The post Mystical Soft ..read more

Iterum Nata – From The Infinite Light (2024) – Review

Do you know why I like myself a session with Leonard Cohen from time to time? Because this long-departed artist exudes a calm and welcome respite from the hectic search-and-review missions across all those metal genres out there. His age-old records offer some private time of respite and introspection. Something we should have more of in these dangerous times. Now, Cohen’s style might sound somewhat similar to some of Dark Folk outfits on this zine. Some of the more ethereal pieces of similar ilk firmly had their stakes in Black Metal before and suddenly feel the need to call upon ..read more

Do you still remember Sult‘s terrible visage devoid of skin? You know, the totally terrified look of some unfortunate human being enduring atrocious torture and not knowing what comes next? Yes, that guy. Well, it looks like somebody just tried to cover this up and reconstitute the facial features. Only, they did a total fuck job and the scarred tissue ain’t pretty in its pinkish horror. Welcome to Bedlam. Scream at me, Kollapse. If you still can do so without a mouth, that is. Ouch, endless pain ahead. To get things straight. AR – the title of the … [...] Click to raid more! The post Kol ..read more

Inver – On This Earth (2024) – Review

It’s the bleak album cover that made it happen. The successful arrival of Inver‘s debut album On This Earth at our review pipe’s doorstep, that is. And – I guess – the fact that the record aired mid-January when everything is should be frozen helped a bit, too. Melancholy galore, no end in sight for the ceaseless wintery depression. So, we got ourselves fertile grounds for doomy musings on sunless days, one would think. But then – nada. The record continued to fester unmolested by prying eyes in the sumpy realms of our datafeed. Because whenever we fired the … [...] Click to raid more! Th ..read more

Eternal Storm – A Giant Bound to Fall (2024) – Review

Already Eternal Storm‘s debut album Come The Tide generated some giant waves over here. A moon-driven show of force that waltzed straight onto the lofty heights of the RMR 2019 Top 10. A relatively rare occurrence, but not completely unheard of. And that’s all great but – at the same time – kind of scary for a first-ever record of a band. Because this posed an immediate challenge to Eternal Storm. An invite from hell to – at least – produce an equal record for their sophomore run. The infamous second piece that often shipwrecks on overwrought … [...] Click to raid more! The post Eternal S ..read more

Myrkur – Spine (2023) – Review

The RMR crew was forever mesmerized by Folkesange, Myrkur‘s 2020 piece. Full-throttle and somewhat unhinged folk, tongue-in-cheek, with that hidden evil streak that renders Ms. Bruun‘s records so alluring. And I still vibrantly remember when M hit, that excellent piece so full of controversy. Half of the extreme metal adepts were foaming at the mouth and the rest kinda careened between disbelief and adoration. All of that led to an excellent brand of filigrane yet blackened fury that the RMR crew always found alluring. So, here Spine hits our review pipe with some funky splash. Amalie Bru ..read more

Video: Final Coil deliberate Chemtrails! Wait, what?

Whoa, folks! Rendition in Dystopia right here in a video. Pain and suffering in dirty cellars, complete with waterboarding. That’s what Final Coil’s latest clip Chemtrails depicts. The band landed one hardened metal blow that I didn’t quite expect from an outfit with an out-of-the-box yet refined style of Alternative and Progressive Rock and Metal. Somnambulant II, the ghostly rendering of olde songs, placed Final Coil firmly on our radar. And now they’re gearing up to release their new record The World We Inherited in early ’24. So, here they are with a clip that didn’t quite click … [...] C ..read more

Dawn of a Dark Age – Transumanza (2023) – Review

I am going to make a bold statement. Those who don’t fancy Myrkur1 and her metal machinations won’t appreciate Dawn of a Dark Age. The RMR reviewers just came across a band so out-of-the-box that the famous crate already disappeared in the haze somewhere. An outfit that has put the term ‘pig-headed’ to shame – and then added a few layers to the meaning of genre fusion. Case in point, the critiques about the band’s past works I was able to find range from overflowing exuberance to – mainly – darkly ominous mutterings about abject noise pollution.
