Romance is alive under the stars and cool breezes
Its 24th March 2001 and I am officially exhilarated, but also tired from the trip … I guess it
would have been easier in Hemingway’s days.
Havana. Even arriving there is romantic
Flying down over the Florida Keys … beautiful spots of green, sand and clear blue/green
water. Then we’re over Cuba… absolutely drop-dead gorgeous! The land is rich dark brown
topsoil. The coastline is dotted with small communities, not villages, not cities, not condos,
interspersed with miles and miles of pure white sand. This was Hemingway’s Cuba – at last,

This form of communication harks back to an era where ink met paper, thoughts were composed meticulously, and anticipation was a part of the correspondence process.
But it’s not just a thing of the past. Letter writing, belie ..read more

A chance encounter makes for a very special day – Tony Lewis, Malvern. 2020
The roads here in Dar-es-Salaam, better known as simply Dar, don’t seem to be that
much better than Kampala where I have just come from, the latter seeming to get
worse every time I visit. At least here one does not have the little chap by the side of
the road ready to fill the pothole to ease your passage and seek a small stipend for
his trouble as they do in Kenya and Uganda.
Here in Tanzania, there does at least seem to be far more of a serious work ethic and
not the tendency to try and “get something for nothing” t ..read more
