One of the great epiphanies many experience as they enter the golden years is the world is your oyster. Typically, seniors are retired, the children have moved out and moved on, the mortgage is paid off and there is more spare time. There is a sense of freedom to do things one previously could not do because of other obligations. And with this emancipation, one of the most popular activities people pursue is travel. Travel is fulfilling, educational and enlightening. It is equally enjoyable as a single, as a couple, with friends or in a large group. But to truly maximize the experience, leave ..read more

Care wrapped in love. The focus on making certain the care Mom and Dad receive is not just a “service” is at the forefront of conversations I have with adult children. They seek more than a transaction – whether it’s taking medicine in the morning, going to appointments or assisting in a purchase. Key Concerns They want a loving touch, a warm smile and empathetic eyes supporting their aging parents. And, they want it for the full continuum of needs. The list of needs, long and diverse, generally coalesce under these categories: Health: Adult children have concerns about their parents’ physica ..read more

Take control of your health and safety. Don’t take it from me. I’m not a doctor, however, my good friend Kathryn Holder is. And as I was sharing with her the news of my creating Elderly Care Concierge, she told me it was important for seniors to understand they play a big role in their health and safety. Sure, it is important to visit our health care providers regularly. We encourage you to follow their advice and take the prescribed medicines. But we must also adhere to a healthy lifestyle. I was shocked when she told me 80 percent of all premature deaths are attributed to tobacco use, poor d ..read more

A variety of senior-focused volunteer groups have had a positive impact. Recently, the Elderly Care Concierge team engaged several such organizations, including the Dallas Area Parkinson’s Society and Dallas Area Gerontological Society, through conferences and trade shows. It offered us the opportunity to learn more about their programs and advocacy, and how our company can use them to improve our services.  With an aging population and the desire of seniors to maintain an independent lifestyle as long as possible, the role of companies such as Elderly Care Concierge are growing in demand ..read more

A childhood memory triggered a change for former travel industry executive Sherri Sparks. Sparks’ special relationship with her grandmother made for a wholesome and comforting lifestyle growing up in Michigan. Among her favorite activities was to cook with her grandmother — including the delicious crumb potatoes.  She is able to cook that same recipe today as her grandmother Rosie typed them out and put them together in a book when Sparks graduated from the University of Michigan. The book followed her to Dallas in 2000 when she relocated to the Metroplex. The distance gap was made smalle ..read more

By Sherri Sparks, Owner/Founder, Elderly Care Concierge. When I was younger, I found that maintaining a healthy lifestyle waned significantly as work, family and home responsibilities became a priority. Exercise all but went out the door.  As I entered my 50’s, I committed to a regular fitness program that would be key to enjoying middle age and my future golden years. Exercise has countless benefits for those of all ages, including creating a healthier heart, building stronger bones and improving flexibility. For seniors, there are additional benefits including reducing the risk of chron ..read more

Drinking of water is almost an afterthought. We’re thirsty, take a drink of water. We need to wash down food, take a drink of water. We’re a bit overheated, take a drink of water. Elder Home Care: Ensuring Independence

Advances in the quality of life for seniors are being delivered by a relatively new concept allowing them to maintain their independence and comfort of living in their own homes. This is commonly known as elder home care. The notion of a “concierge” is growing as a desirable option for seniors and their adult children. For years, support alternatives for seniors were either: a.) leave for a retirement center, or 2.) move into the home of an adult child. And while those are not necessarily negative options, experts agree seniors remaining in their own home as long as possible is the most desira ..read more

Spring brings back fond memories of my mom and I heading to the nursery to select flowers to plant in our yard. Now, thanks to innovation, we are finding high tech gardening is fun and rewarding. To this day, I look forward to wandering the aisles to see the annual spring blooms that will color my flower beds each year.  Even as mom approaches 80 years old, gardening is an activity we still enjoy doing together.
