Submissions Are Open: Velour’s Winter 2023 Battle of the Bands

By Zach Collier There are few battle of the bands-styled events in this world that actually grant winners some kind of clout or prestige. Most are overly long snoozefests for both the performers and the audience. Sets are too long, the music is poorly written and poorly performed, and the event is too focused on the competition’s bureaucratic process and not at all on audience enjoyment. Velour Live Music Gallery’s Battle of the Bands is not this way. Advertisement. An exercise in expert indie curation, it functions more like a week-long hipster music festival. 6 nights long, each evening is a ..read more

By Andy McFerren During a typical night at Velour Live Music Gallery’s Battle of the Bands, there might be a band that doesn’t live up to their potential or has on off performance. Tonight, however, every band was on their A-game, playing a tight set. OrcaMind  OrcaMind got the night started. Having garnered a wide fanbase through their Twitch streams, the band had some fans in the crowd who flew in for the event. I can’t get my friends to come to a show, and they have people flying in. The thing that stuck out the most to me about the band was their songs’ capacity for storytelling. They ..read more

By Zach Collier Thursday night’s round of Battle of the Bands was the first night of the week that was light on attendance. This was a stark contrast to Wednesday night, which sold out and was standing room only from start to finish. Even still, the audience was enthusiastic and loud, jamming and cheering and having a great time and growing in intensity as patrons trickled in over the course of the night. Derm One of the most surprising and refreshing trends of this battle of the bands has been a considerable shift in genre and tone. It’s been present every single night in some form or another ..read more

By Mitch Tousley Velour welcomed a packed, sold out show yesterday for a truly unforgettable night of music. The line stretched down the block and stayed that way well after doors opened and the show had begun. Lazy Loners Kicking off the night was the new and energetic Lazy Loners. Their set opened with a pulsing, tom-driven drum groove. They proved their excitement for the evening quickly and moved into a second song featuring Strokes-style lead guitar and gravely skater kid vocals. Their fourth song, “Crystal Meth Grandma,” opened with dreamy chords, a change of pace from their previous tun ..read more
