Sending Japanese text from C# to JS (IE)

Hi, We would like our software to support Japanese and I’m having trouble with the text not going through the way I expect it to. Basically the C# app has a webBrowser control that hosts a UI written in reactjs. Messages (json object stringified) are passing from the C# code to the JS running in the browser. Reminder, this is IE since it’s a webBrowser control. We will replace it in the future, but that’s not for this discussion. When I try to send messages with Japanese text, I can’t read it on the JS side and I fail to json.parse the data. It does work if I change 3 values in the Japanese OS ..read more

We conduct an annual survey of international developers living in Japan. Our respondents are typically paid significantly better than the overall Japanese market. Among our respondents with less than one year of experience, the median compensation was ¥4.5 million, the 75th percentile was ¥7.5 million, and the 90th percentile was ¥9.9 million. So I think your offer is quite competitive in Japan. I can’t speak to how prestigious Sony Research is. I haven’t personally heard of them, but then I’m not deeply invested in the ML field either ..read more

Hello, I have a full-time offer for a ML Engineer role at Sony RnD, Tokyo and I have a few concerns regarding the pay mainly : A few things about me for information : I am an Indian citizen and in the final year of my Bachelors in a CS adjacent field (Department QS Ranking - 100-150). I did a 16-week Internship at Sony RnD, Tokyo this summer and the experience was good . I really liked the team (everyone could speak English) as well as my project and loved the work culture (fully remote). The stipend was pretty low (8000 yen/ working day) but they sponsored my stay, flight tickets, commute and ..read more

Hello there, It’s been a dream of mine to live in Japan, and I was planning on saving money to study there for a while and try looking for a job there. The problem is that I lost my job in late September last year, and until now, I am unemployed. For now, I’m just studying some technologies. I have a bachelor’s in Computer Science with 3 years of experience as a full-time Front-end web dev. During this time though, I decided to use this time to review things like C++ and Python (which I really enjoy playing with). I’m also using the time to study more Japanese. My question is, all this time wi ..read more

Conversion from contractor to Full time

Because it is hard to fire someone in Japan, it isn’t uncommon for a company to want to hire someone as a contractor first, before offering them regular employment. It does increase your risk personally. Even if you do a great job during the first 4 months, they may not offer you a regular position due to factors beyond your control (e.g. they decide they need to cut costs ..read more

React Native popularity in Japan?
Tokyo Dev Forum
by @pwim Paul McMahon

Our developer survey showed 13% of respondents who answered our “other frameworks and libraries” used React Native. So while it isn’t incredibly popular, it does seem like a fair number of people touch it. I have seen postings on TokyoDev that are looking to hire a Frontend Engineer or Elixir Fullstack Engineer who will touch React Native as part of their job. It could be that it is less common for companies to hire “React Native Developers”. From a long term perspective, I think it is better if you don’t tie your career too specifically to a single technology. A “Mobile Developer” or “Fronten ..read more

React Native popularity in Japan?

Hi all, I’m curious about the relatively popularity of React Native in Japan? I’ve been looking around for a while now, but I haven’t really seen too many positions that use it. A bit about me, I have 3 years of experience as a React Native dev working full stack at a large company in the US (the giant blue globe telecom one, if it matters). I graduated 2020 and my Japanese is nearly conversational, generally I understand the question being asked but struggle to respond. Primarily, I’ve been looking for predominately English positions as I’m not confident in my ability to conduct myself in a b ..read more
