Jah Cuzzi continues their odyssey of free-form psych improvisation, pushing the boundaries of sonic exploration with their latest installment, Panic! At The Conservatory. The record was released earlier this year (April 23rd) via Stoned to Death Records. On this album, Jah Cuzzi’s message emerges from a murky haze, but it’s far from incomprehensible, especially to […] The post Panic! A new improvisational jazz quintet, SML, recently emerged with its debut record, Small Medium Large, which has been on The Third Eye’s radar. The record was released via the excellent Chicago-based label International Anthem. Small Medium Large began as a collection of long-form improvisations recorded during two separate two-night stands at the beloved Highland Park, Los Angeles venue ETA. Unfortunately, the venue closed its doors permanently at the end of 2023 after being a significant site for the burgeoning West Coast jazz and improvised music sound. Luckily, the venue was open long enough ..read more

After releasing two fantastic LPs in 2023 – Venal Twin and Inspection of Cruelty – the Brooklyn-based group emerges even stronger in the summer of 2024 with their newest record. The liner notes for the record, written by Jesse Jarnow, give us a look inside the minds of the quartet, which includes Jonathan Byerley (guitar), Dave Mandl (bass), Robert Boston (keys), and Andreas Brade (drums). Mind Screen is the result of Emergency Group’s first extended studio visit. The gr ..read more

The Menacing Psych Rock of England’s Psychic Lemon

To fully understand Psychic Lemon, you must first know where they come from. The band is based in Cambridge in Eastern England, and they say they play “dark psych for Austerity Britain.” I had always heard the term austerity thrown around regarding the U.K., but I never quite understood the meaning. Austerity is a budget-cutting campaign that Britain’s Conservative-led government launched in 2010 in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. Government spending was trimmed across English society, including funding cuts for police, prisons, road maintenance, and libraries. Fourteen years after ..read more

Classic Psych Bands: Pärson Sound

Some music is so good that the world just isn’t ready for it. That may have been the case with Pärson Sound, a pioneering Swedish experimental rock band formed in the late 1960s. They were among the earliest proponents of the psychedelic rock and experimental music scene in Sweden. If you ask any Swedish psych band worth their salt these days, I’m sure they’d know who Pärson Sound is. For the rest of us, maybe we’re still catching on. Bo Anders Persson, along with Thomas Mera Gartz, was one of the band’s central figures. The group also included several other musicians. Their music was characte ..read more

Album Review: Bluestone by Empty House

Empty House has returned with a new record of psychedelic wizardry called Bluestone, released on March 29th. The solo project of Blackpool-based musician Fred Laird sounds stranger than ever, with the ambient sounds on Bluestone creating an instrumental tapestry that sears deep into the night and pulsates with dark energy. Laird wrote and recorded Bluestone after a three-day trip around the Pembroke-shire coastline in November 2023. He says it’s the lunar sister to the brighter-sounding The Golden Hour, recorded during the spring/summer of 2023 but only released in February 2024. The bluestone ..read more

New Music: Kaleidoscopic Rhapsody by Black (W)hole

The Austrian experimental musician Black (W)hole has returned with a new album called Kaleidoscopic Rhapsody, due May 30th. You won’t find a lot of information about the Black (W)hole online, and I get the feeling they may like it that way. The sense of mystery about the project adds to the appeal. Kaleidoscopic Rhapsody consists of 12 tracks that explore the outer fringes of drone, folk, noise, psychedelic, and space rock. I suspect many of the tracks are improvisational, which is always impressive to me. “Rough Landing” opens the record with a foreboding background drone and dissonant acoust ..read more
