On April 15, 1947, Jackie Roosevelt Robinson started at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers in a game against the Boston Braves at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, New York, becoming the first African-American Major League Baseball player in the 20th century. A little over 12 years later, Elijah “Pumpsie” Green entered a game between the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago White Sox on July 21, 1959, at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois, as a pinch-runner and at long-last all 16 Major League Baseball teams had fielded an African-American team member. To this day, 65-years later, the Boston Red Sox still ..read more

BILL “Mombo” MONBOUQUETTE: The Pride of Medford Mass

I have enjoyed every interview I have conducted with a former Red Sox player.  My interview of Bill Monbouquette is near to the top of my most enjoyable sessions. I interviewed “Mombo” about 25 years ago at Frank’s Steakhouse, a Cambridge institution since 1938.  There is nothing pretentious about Frank’s and there was absolutely nothing pretentious about Bill Monbouquette.  And I mean that in the very best way! There was snow on the ground, and a chill the air, but Mombo warmed Franks with 45 years of great baseball memories.  And what a passion Bill had for the game, for ..read more

My dear friend Frank Sullivan would have been 94 years-old on January 23, 2024. And we miss his lovely wife Marilyn who passed away on January 15, 2020. It is still difficult to accept that we have lost both Frank and Marilyn but they left a wonderful legacy and much Aloha. And we have the birth of their great-grandson Wyatt Kaiea to celebrate! They had an extraordinary life and it is timely to revisit all that they experienced and achieved! To say that my pal former Red Sox pitcher Frank Sullivan led an interesting life would be an understatement.  He traveled the world, practiced w ..read more

NEW! DENNIS ECKERSLEY LOOKS BACK ON HALL OF FAME CAREER
Boston Baseball History

When former pitching ace Dennis Eckersley looked back on the 1978 Red Sox, he focused on the team’s 99 victories and their late-season winning streak to force a one game playoff with the Yankees.  “The 1978 team was a very good club, but almost everyone had written us off with two weeks to go.  Then we won eight in a row at the end to give ourselves a shot.  We never gave up,” the Eck remembered, expressing himself in his trademark certainty.  “The playoff loss was devastating but that doesn’t change the fact that it was a very good team.” Eckersley, who provided insightful ..read more

Remembering Hall of Famer Bobby Doerr–No 1 !
Boston Baseball History
by Herb Crehan

Bobby Doerr is the greatest second baseman in the 122-year history of the Boston Red Sox.  In a 1969 poll of Red Sox fans, Doerr was named as the best second baseman joining such former stars as fellow Hall of Famers Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, and Jimmie Foxx on the Red Sox All-Time Team.  When the poll was repeated in 1982 only Doerr, Williams, Yaz and Foxx retained their spot as the very best at their positions. In a fan poll several years ago, Dustin Pedroia was selected as the starting second baseman for the All-Fenway Team and Bobby Doerr was relegated to “first reserve.”&n ..read more
