Jeauni Cassanova is perched on top of a marble mantel, mesh-gloved hands adjusting the bustled train of a Vivienne Westwood dress. “I love the built-in titty,” Cassanova says, gesturing downwards to the padded bustier. “That, and it's meant to have a whale's tail so you can show your ass crack.” The gown is one of the most impressive scores in a collection brimming with rare designer archival pieces and idiosyncratic vintage treasures, marked down from something like $8,000 retail to $1,500 at the sample sale to under $500 thanks to a friendship Cassanova struck up with one of the regular em ..read more

On the song “Echo” off The Marías’s recently-released album Submarine, María Zardoya sings, “Miss the warmth of your neck / when I knew you best / I’m yours, I’m yours,” and later, “Your cry is an echo / and I will let go of your love.” The song captures the central tension of the album: the heartbreaking push and pull of parting ways with someone you still love. It represented a turning point for Zardoya and Josh Conway—co-writer, drummer, and producer of the band—as they wrote the album in the wake of their breakup and the release of their Grammy-nominated LP Cinema (2021). The two founded ..read more

On the hottest day of the year, with the sun baking the sidewalk and the air heavy with humidity, knitwear was not top of mind for most New Yorkers. But inside the converted Centre Street walkup, super baby alpaca scarves, soft cotton separates, and chunky hand-knit sweaters adorned the all-white ground-floor showroom. Despite 90 degrees of uncertainty and age-old prejudices towards "florals for spring," cult knitwear designer Lauren Manoogian reminded editors and New York’s favorite fashionistas that some things remain the same. In conversation with Miu Miu, Hermès, and many others, Manoogi ..read more

Designer Giuliano Calza, 34, still looks at life through the eyes of a child. “Sometimes precious things are the one that makes you scream, ‘Cute!’” he laughs, about to take a sip of a bedazzled SpongeBob SquarePants water bottle. “I really find the most weird things beautiful.” His retro-futuristic GCDS collections have provoked the response “grow up” from more than one stodgy fashion critic with their Hello Kitty references and tongue-in-cheek subversions of tropes like workwear and classic horror. But as he fleshes out his label, Calza has proven he can evolve without rebuffing his fantas ..read more

When photographer Lenne Chai envisions a royal court, it isn’t white kings or queens that sit on the throne. It’s Arden Cho. Chai befriended the Korean American actress—and her similarly majestic dog Chewy—a few months ago and immediately began conceptualizing a shoot with Cho cast as a Korean monarch. The result is a beautiful subversion of traditional royal portraits (unlike the recent painting of King Charles). There is no ballgown but a hanbok—a traditional Korean dress—that floats like a cloud. Cho’s hair is plaited into a modernized Eon'jeun Meori style where a braided bun rests on the ..read more

If you’re of a certain age, your Instagram feed likely features a recurring picture: a happy couple, a raised hand, and a rock. That diamond is a sharp taste of what is sure to come: a long, arduous year or two of scrapbooking, strategizing, and, most importantly, styling.
While bridalwear has traditionally been dominated by the luxury big-wigs—with less-established brands serving as budget-friendly back-ups—contemporary seems to be the new cool. Call Her Daddy’s Alex Cooper eschewed the likes of Elie Saab for "it" designer Danielle Frankel at her Mexico wedding. Belgian up-and-comer Valenti ..read more

Hollie Bowden had an epiphany during an early moment in her would-be career as a stylist. She was on set, assisting Karen Clarkson, when she realized: "I don't want to dress models. I just want to wear it all." Years later, after establishing herself as a foremost interior designer and founding a studio and adjoining gallery in Shoreditch, she has curated the kind of wardrobe most people working in fashion would sell their souls for.
The talents that distinguish her as a self-described interiorist—mainly her drive to hunt rare, unique, and obscure pieces and her uncanny ability to pair them ..read more

The iconic former Vogue editor Diana Vreeland was legendary for her maximalist style. There wasn’t an inch of her Park Avenue apartment that wasn’t awash in bright red lacquer or some densely patterned print. In lifestyle and aesthetic, she and I (a self-affirming minimalist) couldn’t be more different. Nonetheless, I’ve doggedly clung to one of Vreeland’s most-quoted phrases—"the eye has to travel"—as my mantra before embarking on any major closet edits or seasonal clean-outs. Here’s my theory: The optimal time to evaluate your wardrobe’s contents is after returning from a trip.
You don’t h ..read more

There are many ways to show skin: a short hemline, cutouts at the waist, an exposed back, but perhaps the most popular of late has been sheer fabric. This season’s runways provided head-to-toe transparent examples like a creamy white maxi dress at Alaïa and a collection of skin-tight nylon at Saint Laurent. Then, there was a parade of see-through separates: the layered sheer tops at Dries Van Noten, gauzy skirts at Fendi, and gossamer capes at Simone Rocha. Designers aren’t playing in subtlety; they want their customers to bear it all.
Despite the fashion world’s ongoing obsession with gauzy ..read more

“Have you ever heard of spinels?” Chelsey Bartrum asked me at her recent event in Brooklyn Heights. I had not. Apparently, it’s a secondary birthstone for August. “Colored gemstones are like the Wild West,” she later muses. Bartrum has built her jewelry line in that sector of the market, educating her devoted clients about the facets of the stones, process, and industry on TikTok. Bartrum began to share the stories behind her jewelry, the response to which incited a boldness in her designs that matched that of her collection alongside custom gem drops. “We've been able to share the story on ..read more
