Gigots d’agneau

I love West African food, and I’ve been meaning to learn a little conversational French so I can better navigate Francophone African restaurants. But after a recent meal at Yop City — named for a district of Abidjan, Ivory Coast, and newly opened in the Bronx’s Little Italy — I’ve realized I need a better footing in French food, too. Could you recommend a brasserie in Manhattan where I could find gigots d’agneau to compare with my meal in the Bronx ..read more

Street Food—Chinatown Edition

Last night, we saw a show in midtown, and then took the subway home; the first train to come lets us off near one of my favorite street food vendors. The cart, which is on the NW corner of Grand Street and Chrystie Street, is manned by what appears to be a husband and wife team...     They work well together. She takes orders and money AND helps cook. Everything is on skewers, and cooked over charcoal (Royal Oak), which combines nicely with the scent of gasoline from their generator alongside.  Significant Eater demurs - but I like the stuff, though I generally take a bunch of ..read more

This was a tasting for friends and family, so... It's nice to have Joe Ng back in the kitchen. And with Schoenfeld running the FOH, the food was flowing smoothly out of said kitchen last night. A friends and family where you actually get to eat - comfortably and fillingly. These guys are pros, and it shows, and obviously RedFarm has had a head start at Food Parc (where I've never been, btw). As anyone who has eaten at Chinatown Brasserie knows, Ng's food, at its best, is both playful and delicious. Here's a sample, the Pac Man Shrimp Dumplings... They were tasty too; and yes - that's guacamol ..read more

Urban Space Food Halls

Food Halls are fairly ubiquitous in New York City these days.  And I'm generally not a fan, but yesterday I happened to be in the Union Square neighborhood walking home, when I noticed Urban Space on 14th Street; I'd not seen this location before, though I'd heard of Urban Space Vanderbilt.   So I popped in just for the hell of it, and noticed a stall that was seemingly opening for its 1st service day.  I mean, this stall wasn't even in Sietsema's review of Urban Space Union Square, which was only written back in January.  As a matter of fact, it's (as of this moment) not e ..read more

Urban Hawker

Back from a conference in NYC yesterday, where before our flight we had the chance to check out Urban Hawker which I read about in the NYTimes in January. Developed by KF Seetoh, Tony Bourdain's partner in his multi-ethnic street food project for the old Fulton Street pier fish market. As veterans here probably already know, things got complicated and then Tony checked out, but Mr. Seetoh kept at it. A pared down version of AB's vision focusing on just Singapore street-food 'hawkers', who had been cleared out of Singapore streets in an effort to polish the city for foreigners - I think some ha ..read more

My daughter and I are taking a baking course today near Providence and will be driving home to VA tomorrow. We are staying just east of NYC tonight and would love to make a quick stop to bring home some good NYC bagels. Does anyone know of a place that is relatively close to I95? I don’t know NYC at all and want to be quickly on the way home. Outside the city but along the way is fine too - just want to get the real deal ..read more
