My steer I got a couple weeks ago was banded on Aug 25th and they haven't fallen off yet. They have been like halfway off for a while, and they were bleeding some a couple days ago. Im kinda wondering if the band isn't tight enough. I'm not sure how long it usually takes for them to fall off or if they usually bleed? I have a picture just not sure if that’s allowed ..read more

I'm curious as to what is the best breed for subsistence ranching. We have 50 acres in East Texas. Only want about 6 head. I figure one bull and 5 cows. May do one steer to raise to butcher. What information do I need to know? As far as inoculations that need to insure a solid head of beef. I don't want to get any other livestock an diseases ..read more

I inherited a ranch of my grandparents in Wyoming. They sold all the livestock a couple years back when they retired. Now I really want to get it going again. They had cows, sheep and pigs. There is 160 acres and 100 acres of that is irrigated for hay. Also the ranch is right on the river and has a canal for irrigation. Any ideas of how many cows and sheep I could run would be a great help. Looking at doing a cow calf operation ..read more

Hi! I will have 5 acres of pasture, My plan is to buy 5 weaned Angus calves every 6 months then either, sell, butcher them at 18-24 months. First, is that even a good idea? Ha! Second, if I supplement some with hay and maybe grain finish, is this possible on 5 acres? Would it help if I had 4 -1.25 acres separate pastures to rotate? My place would be in central to Southern NC. I apologize for my naivety, but figured this is a safe place for a beginner. Randy ..read more

Hei ? I'd like to ask please, when a cow gets ill, does it tend to drink less than normal? More than normal? I'm asking as I'd like to know if by monitoring the daily water consumption of a cow, I could tell if it's sick or not. Therefore I'd like to ask how the water consumption of a cow changes when its ill, if it changes at all. Thank you ..read more

Hello, my mother in law bought my fiance a polled hereford calf from a live stock auction June 18th of this year. She had just been pulled off her mother and they guessed her to be a month or so old. I dont feel like she's growing the way she should be. We have ran fecal and she did have some parasites but not many. My in laws said they almost think she's a miniature or just bad genetics. However, the steer she's with is also hardly grown I dont think. But he was a bottle baby. Here are... Calf seems to be very small for her age ..read more
