Applications are invited for one of our two Royal College of Surgeons accredited Bariatric Clinical Fellowships. Phoenix Health was founded by Prof David Kerrigan, Past-President of BOMSS and the fellowship programme is in its 16th year. The training is delivered by a team of 4 bariatric surgeons led by Mr Shafiq Javed, a senior bariatric surgeon with over 25-year experience in performing complex primary & revisional bariatric surgery. Dear Colleagues and Friends, I am thrilled to confirm the 2024 dates for the 7th BOMSS Expert Meeting. The meeting is run by and for all BOMSS members and has now reached the 7th edition and will be held in the same location as the previous years. Both the hotel and the beautiful Italian Dolomites in the village of Corvara have indeed met our expectations in the previous conferences and contributed to the success of the meeting. BOMSS have a number of council roles that we wish to fill and are looking for those who wish to make a contribution to the leadership of our specialty as a member of BOMSS Council. We have carefully considered the election process, and to be consistent with the constitution of our CIO, these council roles will be elected by the full membership. This means that IHPs, trainees and consultant BOMSS members all have a vote for these roles, and subsequent elections into trainee and surgeon roles. We understand that accessing bariatric (weight loss) surgery on the NHS can be a frustrating experience and BOMSS is working hard to improve this situation. One consequence of the current lack of NHS provision of this treatment is that people decide to self-fund their care, either in the UK or abroad. BOMSS strongly advises UK residents to be cautious when considering bariatric surgery abroad. Dear Colleagues, You will all be aware of the recent publication of updated CG189 guidance for obesity which was published by NICE on July 26, 2023 – Overview | Obesity: identification, assessment and management | Guidance | NICE. The role of Chair of the National Bariatric Surgery Registry (NBSR) committee has become available, following the successful appointment of Prof. Kamal Mahawar as BOMSS Treasurer.
