Microfocus COBOL - Remote debugging requires ALL programs to be compiled for debugging?
Stack Overflow » Cobol

Being new to Microfocus Cobol, I've setup a debug config to remotely debug programs that reside on an AIX server. The whole system consists of many programs. Only the programs that must be debugged have been compiled to .int, all others are .gnt files. When debugging, the program starts as expected, but as soon as it calls a program that was compiled to gnt (no debug), the debug session terminates with this message: Loaded: /lib/XAH90001.gnt- Not compiled for debugging. If I debug on the AIX machine itself with the less user friendly animator, it just runs the called program. Can this be fixed ..read more

VSCode snippet, how to force the starting column of a line?

as cobol dev, I have to start comments at a certain column in the code. I would like to know if there's a way to tell "for this line, start at column 7" to VSCode with snippets I didn't find how to do. Maybe is there an opposite of the \t ? It would at least be better than nothing ..read more

Adding parenthesis in 'IF' statement

I have a question concerning the use of parenthesis in IF statements in COBOL. Let's say we have : 05 SHIRT-COLOR PIC X(02). 88 BLUE-SHIRT VALUE 'B '. 88 WHITE-SHIRT VALUE 'W '. I would like to know if there is a difference between : IF BLUE-SHIRT OR WHITE-SHIRT and IF (BLUE-SHIRT OR WHITE-SHIRT) Will the two IF statements give the same result or not? Thank you for your answer ..read more

WEB CONVERSE to an api returns invalid request error (RC=400)

I am trying to make rest api call from my cics-cobol program. The Web-Open was successful. During the web converse i am getting return code = 400 with response - {"detail":"There was an error parsing the body"}. When do we usually get such errors? The API call to the same URL with same JSON request body works fine from POSTMAN. But through web converse i am not able to get the same response. Any suggestions on how to fix this? In order to compare the body received by both means (by cics & by postman), is there a way to put print statements in the api call to see the body it has received ..read more

How to process non formatted numeric variable from SYSIN DD from JCL in COBOL

I coded a very simple COBOL program that should take data from sysin dd * and put it in my WORKING-STORAGE variable, but it doesn’t work as expected. The problem is when I try to pass a value of 10 to a pic 9(10) variable, coded like this in jcl: //SYSIN DD * 10 /* I get 1000000000 instead of 0000000010. Is there a simple way to make it work without changing the input data? Thanks in advance ..read more

Reading binary signed, trailing sign integers from mainframes

I'm attempting to read what I believe is a fixed-width file into Python. Haven't typically had to deal with encoding issues before, and this one stumps me a bit. File has no extension, I believe its from a mainframe cobol system. When I open it in sublime I see this: 5cf0 f1f2 f4f2 f0f2 f401 489c 024c f0f1 f2f5 f2f0 f2f4 0148 9c02 5c00 1c00 0000 0000 0000 0000 0040 4040 4040 4040 4040 4040 4040 4040 4040 4040 4040 4040 4040 ... and so on The best encoding I see for this is cp037 or cp1140: with open(said_file, encoding='cp1140') as f: data = f.read() results in somewhat legible materia ..read more
