Solo'd this time, my friend was fishing the Spotty Tournament. Hit the water around 8am, nice weather for a February, minimal wind and water was calm, dirty, but calm. Picked up some nice sized healthy bait from the receiver and headed out. The bite was very slow, kinda expected that, except for about a two hour period where the fish rang the dinner bell. First fish was a nice sized Calico, second, third and forth were good sized Sand bass. Got two on the sardines and two on the hookup baits. I stuck around for a bit, saw a young sea lion trying to eat a trigger fish, different. After the b ..read more

Okay, so my friend called and said he wanted to pre-fish the bay for this weekend's Spotty Bowl deal. That means no bait fishing, bah, I'm definitely a live bait guy. Anyway, it looked like there was a window between storms and I was getting cabin fever, so what the heck. Started out fairly nice, light breeze from the SE, barely any ripples on the water and the tide was moving out. We started out in our usual spots, no love from the Spotties but I did manage to get a couple of sculpin on an orange hook up bait. The weather started getting rough, the tiny... It did get rough, I'd guesstimate ..read more

A couple of friends and I hit Dana Point Sunday. Chilly, wind from the east, wind waves minimal, swells on the low side and high tide. Eventually the wind died down completely and the water was glassy. Unfortunately the really good bait we've been getting from the receivers has ended, at least for now. We ended up with some larger dines that must have just been loaded as they were in bad shape. Fishing wasn't much better, hit a few areas outside, not even a nibble. Ended the day in the harbor with a tank of half dead dines. I caught one short halibut, as did one of my friends, the other got ..read more

My fishing buddy and I decided to hit San Diego Bay, haven't been there in awhile so what the heck, right? Weather was COLD, but survivable, little wind. There was an extreme tidal flow due to a King's Tide. I got there before my friend did so I booked it to the bait receivers and loaded up with some nice sardines, small and healthy. A good start. My friend, and his wife, are more of a hook-up baits type so a kayak scope was plenty. When my friend arrived we met up at a spot we fish for halibut. Bah, nada, just a coupe of tail biters, so we headed to another location to try our luck on some ..read more

Friend and I hit the water out of Dana Point yesterday. Weather was a tad choppy at the start of the day but calmed down to hardly a breeze by 12pm. Bait was great once more, 3-5 inch and healthy. Water was clear, you could see down a ways. Headed north this time but nothing seemed to want to bite. Came in closer to shore, caught a couple of short halibuts and a couple of short bass. Friend did about the same. I did catch a first though, a Cabazon, looked like a mix between a sculpin and a ling cod, was blue also. Too short to keep, but it was an unusual, and new, catch for me ..read more

So I had a couple of guests for fishing yesterday, went from Dana Point. You know, lately the receivers have had some decent sized bait, 4-5", hope that lasts. Weather was good, offshore breeze turning inshore around 1:00pm, barely a ripple on the water surface but the surfers were enjoying the swells. And the King Tide generated quite a current in the harbor, for it's size anyway. My guests were new to ocean fishing, one was new to fishing. They indicated they wanted to fish in the kelp because that's where they were told the fish were. So off we went. We got to the kelp area and within 10 ..read more
