Travel with us to Montserrat. This island country is a British Overseas Territory found in the Caribbean. Montserrat is a mountainous island and is part of the Lesser Antilles chain. The small island has black sand beaches, coral reefs, and an active volcano known as Soufriere hills which has several lava domes forming its summit. This week we are looking at a banknote from Peru. Peru is a South American country that is home to many Incan ruins such as Machu Picchu and Cusco, and home to parts of the Amazon rainforest. The name Peru comes from the word “Biru” which was the name of an Inca chief who ruled around 1522. Spanish explorers gave Peru its name in the 16th century, and it has been used ever since. This week we are looking at a banknote from Liberia. Liberia is a West African country bordering the Atlantic Ocean. The country is also referred to as the “Land of the Free” as a homage to the country’s freedom from slavery. It was founded by freed U.S. slaves on land acquired for them by the American Colonization society. Liberia was never subjected to colonial rule, and is the oldest republic in Africa.
