Twelve and a half years later. That’s how long it’s been since I got locked up.  The big Sisterlocks’ price question constitutes a yes or no answer, right? All this time with my Sisterlocks has led me into a gray area. Also see Is Sisterlocks Really worth it? Let me explain. Terez Howard, Virtual Assistant/Writer Strike 1. During that first year, my consultant did not show up to all of my retightenings, and at the time, I lived two and a half hours away. Starting locs is quite a journey. Even if you've done your research and kind of know what to expect, going through the experience makes a whole lot of difference. The magical stage For a majority of people the most challenging stage is the beginning phase. As exited as they are about getting locs, not many people are comfortable with short frizzy locs that don't "behave". Especially women. Nearly every day I see the complaints in loc groups. However, what people often refer to as the ugly stage, I experienced as the magical phase. The start of my Braidlocs. I went from a full fro to sca ..read more

In 2013, I started my Micro Locs with Braids. After going natural, publishing Going Natural How to Fall in Love with Nappy hair and maintaining two websites and webstores, it was time for a change. Honestly, I thought I would never loc my hair. Not that I didn't like locs. I just thought it wasn't for me because: This is the length I started with. I took one last picture of my fro, my all-time favorite natural hairstyle as I didn't know if I would ever wear an Afro again. I started my locs going to an African braider in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn. Braiding my hair took 8 hours. Products re ..read more

My Barrel roll styled Micro Locs/Braidlocs by Johanna from the Hair Box Although I started my locs with tiny braids, a certified Sisterlocks consultant has always maintained my braidlocs. That is a bit different than interlock maintenance. Interlocking is usually a four-point rotation, 12-6, 3-9, 6-12, 9-3 as you can see in the video. A Sisterlock rotation though doesn’t necessarily have to be a four-point rotation. A Sisterlocktitian is trained to start and maintain your locs based on the curl pattern of your hair. So, depending on the type of curl on your head, you can have a three, four o ..read more

So I got my hair retightened by stylist Nicole at Sabine's Hallway Natural Hair Salon in Brooklyn, New York. They are on Nostrand Avenue and they did a really good job. But now it's time to take them out for a curly look and see how that looks. Keep watching. So taking this hair out is a process. I mean, these are little rubber bands and it's not easy to take them out, so you have to cut them. And when you cut them, you have to make sure that you don't cut your locks. But if you don't do this, the ends may loosen.  That's how you start taking out this style, the twists. This is to keep t ..read more
