Should I get it?

I found a Sol Cat 18 for free. There is a hole in the port pontoon, it comes with a trailer and mast but that's about it. I would need a trampoline, sails, new rigging, rudder, dagger board and wheels on the trailer as well as rewiring. Should I get it or would it be too much to take on and not worth it? submitted by /u/Corsair1313 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

What is a good way to start in cross ocean sailing. I am young still in school but this is something I would very much like to do later in life, and I am curious about where to start. And if anyone has any resources they could share about sailing in general that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. submitted by /u/BruvCicle [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Power or Sail? Thinking about my retired future

Hi all. I have a few years before I actually need this information but this is more going to be for a future me. My hope is to retire and spend my time port hopping in the gulf/bahamas. I know my options are for a power or sailing catamaran. I want a power cat but don't want to spend my retirement funds buying gas. My wife is getting RA and fears she won't be able to help or do anything if we get actual sails. Since I don't know anything about sails/sailing atm, how automated is the current state of sailing? ie...raising and lowering the sails etc. I know there are autopilots that steer. I'm ..read more

How beneficial is the 14’ beam on a Gemini for finding dockage?

I often see a reference to Geminis that "with just a 14 foot beam you can dock in a normal boat slip". How true is this and how difficult is it to find slips (transient or monthly) for 35' cats with a beam 15' and more? submitted by /u/Flashy_Law5605 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Can you suggest a good catamaran under $100k

I am looking to purchase a catamaran in 3 to 6 months from now. Just finalizing some finances. The boat would be single-handed by me and will be a liveboard which will reside somewhere either in Florida or the Carolinas likely on a mooring in a slip. Anyhow I have always loved the Gemini catamarans for their functionality and low entry price point. I also see some PDQ and Prouts available. I want to stay under 40 feet. Any suggestions on what I should consider aside from the Gemini? Thank you! submitted by /u/Flashy_Law5605 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Would a catermaran be a good choice for open seas?

I own an acre of land in Alaska on an island where the only access is by boat. When I bought the acre I also bought a Trojan powerboat. I paid some people lots of money to fix it up and they basically tore it up, so I am looking for a new boat. My choice seems to be a motorsailer, a catamaran, or a submarine. Do you think a catermaran would be a good choice? submitted by /u/Serpardum [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I bought 2 catamarans and one of the trampolines seem to be in ok condition. I bought these with the intention of learning along the way. I was wondering if instead of buying new trampolines from a company if I could find a free one on marketplace and use the mat from that to make my own. What do you guys think? submitted by /u/DefiantCombination68 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

So my husband and I just found a17ft dinghy catamaran for free & brought it home. My parents had one when I was a small kiddo & I would love to introduce my kids to it, but I don't know where to start. We're not much on sailing, but we live near a ton of lakes and live the water. It needs some love for sure but I haven't a clue where to find info about it. Tia for any suggestions. submitted by /u/ronirahl23 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Anyone have experience with some of the foiling beach cats? Maybe a Nacra F18, or F20, or iFly - something in that category?

I’m curious if anyone has any direct experience with these type of cats and foiling them, and where in the world that type of sailing is popular? I grew up sailing a Nacra 5.8 and have been on many different types of boats both recreationally and racing - but I’m wanting to pursue living somewhere that has a healthy Cat racing scene. Quick edit for clarity: I’m interested in learning about people’s experience with the boats themselves - and separately very interested about learning where people race them. submitted by /u/trippingWetwNoTowel [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
