PostgreSQL® and Planning for Those Unknown Events  “You won’t need it for every instance. But when you do, you’ll notice the difference right away.”  Sure, this quote may be squarely about Instaclustr Managed PostgreSQL on Azure NetApp Files (ANF) but the underlying lesson certainly rings true for countless other (read: non-technical) situations as well:  Going for a hike on a trail you already know like the back of your hand? You probably won’t need a compass, but it could prove rather handy if you become disoriented  Driving around in snowy conditions all winter? You won ..read more

The pgvector open source extension for similarity search is now available as an add-on to your Instaclustr for PostgreSQL® services.    The pgvector extension provides the ability to store and search ML-generated vector type data. Using a specific index type for querying a table, pgvector allows you to find a vector’s exact or approximate nearest neighbors, or data items.  Utilizing machine learning models, all data items from a set can be mapped into a single n–dimensional vector space, irrespective of the dataset’s size. Known as data vectorizing, this process transforms ..read more

Why Use PGVector?  We’ve all been in this position before: trying to quickly solve a technical problem just to end up spending hours browsing through endless documentation in the hope of finding a solution. With all that time going to waste, there has to be a better way to search documentation.   And now, there is.  Instaclustr has recently introduced the PGVector extension to our PostgreSQL Managed Service, enabling users to quickly and easily search text data without the need for a specialized database to store your embeddings—a major development in the realm of textual d ..read more

Where Did I Drop My PostgreSQL® Cluster?  Instaclustr by Netapp has seen enormous growth in the number of accounts that our larger enterprise customers have created to manage their deployments. This naturally led to the introduction of Instaclustr Organizations linked to accounts in a similar, flexible way; you could even have a user manage multiple organizations.  That can be a lot of users, linked to even more accounts, linked to a few organizations, all of whom are creating and managing increasingly large clusters, reliably serving data upstream into their business functions.  ..read more

PostgreSQL®, Docker, and Shared Memory
Instaclustr Blog » PostgreSQL
by Instaclustr
7M ago
A fast and convenient (and common) way to deploy PostgreSQL® is in a Docker container. However, this can have some unexpected complications since PostgreSQL relies heavily on shared memory, and Docker handles shared memory differently from a traditional system. This means some extra care is needed to ensure your PostgreSQL system is running as well as it can.  What is Shared Memory?  A computer will normally have several different types of memory, all with different access latency and read and write speeds. The fastest of these is the cache that lives on the same chip as your CPU, an ..read more
