I've driven past Werribee over the past few days and have noted the following species in their off display paddocks. - Their bachelor group of Scimitar Horned Oryx have presumably moved here from the Lower Savannah. - I only saw a single Addax unfortunately. They were at just two as of eighteen months ago. - The trio of Ankole Cattle were still there. - I saw a single Zebra. Maybe their young stallion Mudhe (2019)? - Also saw a large animal. I initially confused it to be another Ankole... Werribee Open Range Zoo News 2023 ..read more

Australasian Hippo Population As shown below, the regional population of both species has dwindled with only two facilities now holding Common hippopotamus; and four holding Pygmy hippopotamus. Imports are desperately needed as both populations are already quite inbred. Monarto Safari Park has expressed an interest in holding Common hippopotamus in the near future. I’ve done a few of these reviews now, they’re probably more like walk-throughs than reviews, but hopefully they are useful. So far they are all Aussie zoos, except for Ueno Zoo in Japan. If you like what I do, I’ve started this thread as an easy reference, and hopefully I will keep adding more zoos. I have one thread for each zoo, and if I revisit a zoo I add any updates as a post on the existing thread.... Akasha’s Zoo Reviews ..read more

Nura Diya Australia review

Yesterday, I visited Taronga Zoo's new Australian animals precinct, Nura Diya Australia, for the very first time. Nura Diya means 'this country' in Sydney First Language, and the name was chosen in consultation with Taronga's First Nations working group. The precinct is not totally finished - the Night Walk, the revamped nocturnal house - is yet to open. This post will be my review, including photos, of what I was able to see, and others are more than welcome to include your own reviews as... Nura Diya Australia review ..read more

I have been working on a population list for Przewalski's Horse for over a year and although there are only four official holders, detailed information has been difficult to source. Below is what I have so far, I'll detail what I know about each facility. If anyone has anything to add I'd appreciate it. Once I gather some more info, I'll post a complete list in a new population thread. Altina, Monarto, TWPZ and Werribee all hold breeding herds, with fairly regular transfers. There is also a... Australasian Maned Wolf Research Thread

I have been researching Maned Wolf for a couple of years now and managed to find info on seven of the eight holders fairly quickly. Altina is the only holder I don't have a list for, and as they are the main holder, the list has come to a standstill. I will post what I know as it could still be of interest, and any corrections/additions would be appreciated. Maned Wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) have been kept in Australia since 1982. By 2008 the population had dwindled and by 2009... Australasian Maned Wolf Research Thread ..read more

Altina Wildlife Park Review

Situated on the south bank of the Murrumbidgee River, Altina is a working cattle and cropping farm, which also holds a two-hundred hectare zoo. Owned by the Altin family, it is the realisation of a dream to ‘bring Africa home to Australia’. It began with exotics obtainable by private holders, and then started operating under a zoo licence in 2004. The only way to see Altina is by booking a tour, and when you see the scale of the operation, and the fact that it is intwined with the farm,... Altina Wildlife Park Review ..read more
