How do I get into barrel racing?

I have been riding on and off for years and I would normally ride English and I had been starting jumping and that sort of thing. Recently though I have found a new barn with a well-known barrel racer as my trainer. Her business is still very small so group lessons are really small. The thing is it is all Western lessons on learning how to do bending and all that which I have never known much about and have never learned. I know that I want to go somewhere with these lessons and I really... How do I get into barrel racing ..read more

Beginner struggles with speed

I do 30 minute lessons every week and I don't use spurs, just kicking and a quirt. The most I can get the horses to do is a canter, and they slow to a walk when we're going around the barrels, even if i'm kicking and such. What can I do? I know it's not the horses, it's just me, because I've ridden many different ones and I've seen them go fast ..read more

How many years does it take to train a barrel horse for top-level performance? I know it takes many years to train a dressage horse for GP level. I am wondering if it is the same with barrel horses ..read more

Barrel racing - kicking and whipping?

Please note that I'm only asking this out of curiosity and am not trying to start an argument - I know this can be a hot topic so please try to be as un-argumentative as possible I was watching some barrel racing on YouTube, and noticed how much the riders kicked and whipped their horses, especially kicking after each turn, and then whipping a lot as they galloped out the gate. I was wondering, is that normal? Would you say it's fair to the horse? Here's the video I saw for anyone... Barrel racing - kicking and whipping ..read more

Just wondering what y'alls opinions on barrel racing is? I've heard so many different things regarding the horse's wellness and such?‍♀️. I'm going to keep my opinion out of it for now, but I would like to hear what y'all think. I want this to be a safe space to hear everyone's opinions/concerns without anybody bashing another person. feel free to banter opinions back and forth, but please don't let it get aggressive. I know there are both english and western riders on here, so I am... Controversy on barrel racing ..read more

This may be a bit of an unusual request, but... I’m writing a fictional story where one of the supporting characters is a barrel racer. I’ve never been on a horse in my life and need advice trying to make this section of the tale fairly accurate, so I don't look like an idiot. I don’t need precise details, just a rough outline, and my google skills are not up to the task. The story may not ever be published but it could wind up on a free site. But I’ll still give credit. What are some of your go to exercises on and off horses to help improve core strength and get back in the rhythm? We were consistently in 2D poles and 3D barrels anywhere and now we're back in the 4D and barely in 3D poles. Unfortunately I know I need to ride more but with my older daughter school, homework, etc, my job, pumping and baby boy I'm lucky to be able to ride 3x a week. He does get worked in hand if I'm not able to ride(backing up hills, trot... Having trouble with seat after having a baby ..read more

I am not a member of the WPRA as of yet, but plan to join in the near future. I have a couple questions needing cleared up. As a permit, Rookie or Pro card holder of WPRA 1.) Are you allowed to run at your local fun shows/jackpots/fair etc with the horses you are using in the WPRA ? 2.) Are you able to still be a member or run as a non member at other organizations with the horses I run in WPRA ? example: NBHA? if not what if i have a horse that runs at NBHA, but not... Hello! Does anyone have any good videos they can share on where their hands/arms should be around the barrel? Or any tips? Im struggling a little bit. Also when do you grab the horn going around the barrel (before you hit the barrel or while you're hitting the barrel?) In my area we don't have a lot of barrel racing trainers and I can't seem to find any videos on YouTube ..read more
