The final report of the Cass Review gender identity services for children and young people was published on 10th April and immediately welcomed by both the government and Labour. Health Secretary Victoria Atkins said of the report, the result of four years of work, “This review strikes hard and sure at an area of public policy where fashionable cultural values have overtaken evidence, safety and biological reality.” Her Labour counterpart, Wes Streeting, called it “a watershed moment”. So far there has been no comment from either Lib Dem leader Ed Davey or Health spokesperson Daisy Cooper.&nbs ..read more

Lib Dem policy on prescribing “gender affirmative medicine”, including puberty blockers, to children, refers to “The right of transgender and gender-variant children to receive puberty-blocking medications until they are eligible for hormone replacement therapy.” Our fringe event on Friday 15th March, 6:30pm at the Raddison, will bring together two leading experts in the field to shed light on the wider context of synthetic sex change practices as applied to children as part of our campaign to urge the Lib Dems to update their policy. The Curious Case of the Composited Questions
Liberal Voice for Women Blog
by Juliet Line

Twice a year at Lib Dem Conference, ordinary members get to hold those in positions of power to account through the ability to posit questions to Federal Committees, the Parliamentary Parties and the Leader. Some of those questions are  taken live during the conference itself, with the questioner being offered the chance to ask a live follow-up question. For the rest,  a couple of months later the questions receive a written reply which is published online.  At Spring Conference 2023 there was a 25-word limit placed on questions. Liberal Voice for Women Chair Zoe Hollowood posed ..read more

Open letter to Daisy Cooper

Dear Daisy, We watched with interest your response to a question from a caller on the Iain Dale phone-in last September.  The caller asked you to comment on the fact that gender critical Lib Dem members had been likened - by Lib Dem councillors, senior officer-bearers and activists - to “an infestation of pubic lice”. “TERFs are like bedbugs, or pubic lice: once you’ve got them you need to actively MAKE them go away.” The screenshots in this letter were all written by the same activist. “Good. Cry more, bastards” Your response was that this was “distasteful” and that those who were offe ..read more

Incel ideology: what it is and why we need to tackle
Liberal Voice for Women Blog

A dangerous and highly misogynistic ideology is quietly growing, largely under the radar of the mainstream media and politicians. The “incel” (short for “involuntary celibate“) movement has been around for thirty years in the USA and is now rapidly gaining adherents here in the UK. In August 2021 Jake Davison killed five people in Plymouth in what has been called a terrorist attack. A member of Liberal Voice for Women argues that Parliament should be legislating to deal with the problem.       Although I had heard the term “incel” in passing, it wasn’t until I re ..read more

But Net Gains for Liberal Voice for Women at Lib Dem Spring Conference Last month’s Lib Dem Conference in York was an eventful and hugely productive few days for the LVW team. We were pleased to have got a Constitutional Amendment on the agenda that would have gone some way to reversing the gender-ideological capture of the Constitution that had occurred in 2016. Our proposal was to make the wording of article 2.5 consistent with article 2.4, which refers to “men and women”. We believed our amendment to be uncontroversial, particularly given the fact that the current wording doesn’t make sense ..read more

Update on Our Recent Letter

Last Friday we sent our letter to Mark Pack urging him to revoke the Definition of Transphobia and also to commission a review of the treatment of gender critical party members based on our concerns outlined here. The letter we coordinated has been signed by 170 individuals. The vast majority of signatories are party members but some are former members who were driven out of the party by its hostility towards their ordinary belief in the binary and immutable nature of biological sex. Some of them also submitted personal testimonies which we will publish soon. The letter has been signed by memb ..read more

Hannah Barnes’ new book Time to Think charts “the rise and calamitous fall of the Gender Identity Development Service for children (Gids), a nationally commissioned unit at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust in north London.” We want to make sure this hugely important book gets into the hands of Lib Dems who need to read it.
