Oil on canvas, 48 x 72 inches
Exhibiting: Dominique Boisjoli Fine Art, Santa Fe, NM
$12500 framed
I love doing these deep forest scenes and the possibilities are endless. A few months before, I had cropped another forest scene and seeing new possibilities with the idea of a yellow moving to red, I was eager to start the very next morning. This is the result.
Since I have a lot of works in progress (fellow artists may want to try that) I began the 4 x 6 foot version and added it to the others working in the studio. It wasn't a matter of simply stretching the previous image. Adjustment ..read more

About this oil:
I was very intrigued by the idea of a stand of bright, yellow trees fading into the shadows. Moving from bright to dark is also an opportunity to use an array of colors to make it happen and I looked forward to watching it play out.
The accuracy of the tree forms is secondary to the color and possible combinations. It’s all about making that yellow form glow and move. The tree on the right creates a stage of sorts and the stream below is useful to amplify the yellows and to provide the surprising reds on the lower left.
It all sounds simple enou ..read more

Exhibiting: Breckenridge Gallery, Breckenridge, Colorado
About this oil:
Rather than creating a natural looking forest scene, I set out to paint something where the color is the main focus. After a lot of experimenting, the idea of the yellow light in the back led me to focus on the leaves being in shadow with a variety of cool colors.
Continuing to maximize the forest colors, I pushed the ground colors but still kept them believable. Those bright, warm tones really set of the cool leaves and yellow glow in the back. The end result is a bright forest arrangement, a dance of patterns that is ..read more

The studio is always and interesting place full of canvases in progress and others nearing finish. This is a portion of the dozen or so oils in play currently.
It is very important for me to have a lot of works going for a number of reasons. It allows for a variety of compositions and color to choose from and it keeps me from getting too bogged down or pressured to complete a particular work. I can stay busy and proceed at a leisurely pace, hopefully avoiding the temptation to overwork a canvas or to make shortcuts to hit a deadline.
There is another interesting side effect as well. Because t ..read more

One of the joys of being an artist, particularly one that loves color, is the freedom to make chromatic arrangements and let the colors go where they lead.
I do like this line of trees and the arrangement is very useful for a variety of color experiments. For this oil, the idea was to create a yellow line of trees, but what of the other elements and their contribution to the finished work?
As this piece evolved, I put in hints of blues behind the trees to make something happen. It created an immediate statement and it was as if the blues were insisting ..read more

Reservoir Color, oil on canvas, 36 x 36 inches
In the studio
$5700 framed
This was a very enjoyable oil to create. The basis of this piece is a highway that cut across a reservoir south of San Francisco. When I lived in California, I saw this scene many times a year and I was always attracted to these landscape and water forms.
Unfortunately, the colors weren't that interesting. All of the hills were the same color green and the water wasn't that inspiring. Years ago, I did a number of small artworks of this area and just this month I had the urge to jump back into the challenge again.

Oil on canvas, 48 x 48 inches
$9250 framed

About this oil:
When talking with other artists and students, I like to bring up the question of how can we make a green forest more interesting. Color is an obvious tool but composition, complexity, contrast, depth and atmosphere are some of the many other solutions and here they are the drivers of this oil.
At least that is what I started out to do last year. This painting is a variation of a smaller, vertical one I was very happy with, so I laid out this more ambitious, 4 foot square version. As it tur ..read more

About this oil
I love the way meadows look, the soft flow of the grasses with their glowing colors and that was my attraction to this scene. Compositionally, this is a clean and elegant landscape made from three horizontal bands.
Now to make it interesting, to create a work of art.
There is an abundance of complexity in each band that produces a rhythm and a flow. The colors are more than they seem - numerous variations of blues and yellows invite the eye to move across the canvas and explore the nuances.
It is my c ..read more
