hi:) I’m a Canadian diaspora curious about exploring my family’s history in Lebanon. I know it’s a long shot but I was wondering if anyone more familiar with this might be able to help. Apologies in advance for the long post- I included detail in case it provides any helpful context. I know the cliché but my family says they lived in the mountains (likely Baalbek region) since Phoenician times and I would love to know if I can follow the family line further past the few known generations, despite there not being many records and the fact I don’t speak Arabic so I cannot read the few I do find ..read more

Hey everyone,I've been noticing a recurring theme whenever I visit Lebanon, and it's got me scratching my head. Every time I encounter distant family members or random old family friends, it's like clockwork – I get bombarded with a series of invasive questions that seem to be on everyone's lips: "What do you do for a living?" "How much do you make?" "Are you married?" "Do you have kids?"It's as if there's an unwritten script that everyone feels obligated to follow, regardless of the situation. I find myself wondering why people back home feel entitled to pry into such personal matters. What ..read more

Paying with cards under new rate

Hi everyone, I found out recently that the government/bank finally moved the official rate to 89,500 LBP. I had no idea so I think that's good news. Let me know if it's not. Other countries that have variable rates keep changing it daily so there's no real issue. But, doesn't seem like Lebanon will change the rate daily or adjust when it changes, which isn't good for us who pay by card. My question is, if we go to Lebanon, can we pay with our international credit cards and Wise card (both cards) and get a normal rate of 89,500 LBP to 1 USD, rather than, e.g., paying 30 USD for a water bottle ..read more

Nothing beats a good old perfectly cooked rotisserie chicken on a lazy Sunday afternoon, and at 900k (800k chicken, 30k delivery and 70k tip) it sure is cheaper than making some at home.
