BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS | What should you do when your blood sugar spikes?
Gestational Diabetes Club

I got a question in my DMs this week, and it made me realise there is one topic I have had really overlooked.  They let me know (in the nicest way possible) that I have talked to death about strategies to prevent a blood sugar spike, but haven’t addressed what to do when it’s already happened.  Great point.  And it’s something that is almost a universal experience - it’s probably happened to you at some point on your gestational diabetes journey, and can be incredibly stressful, confusing and overwhelming.  I want you to have a little more piece of mind in these situations ..read more

*Trigger warning* Mention of disordered eating and miscarriage in this episode.   This is a logical train of thought after a diagnosis of gestational diabetes:   I have high blood sugar → carbs raise blood sugar → I should reduce my carb intake → the keto diet is low carb → keto will help me keep my blood sugar lower and be the best way to manage gestational diabetes   It all seems to check out.   But…..   Nutrition doesn't always follow logic.   And actually, following the keto diet, or just a low carb diet, could be very risky.   Studies measuring high vs l ..read more

You know those days, where no matter what you do, your blood sugar just skyrockets.  You’re eating all the same “safe” foods.  You’re exercising.  You’re drinking water.  All of it.  … Yet for some reason, nothing is working and everything is just OFF.  Well, one of my first questions to you would be, how is your sleep?  It’s easy to gloss over poor sleep as no big deal but it can have an enormous impact on insulin resistance, blood sugar regulation, and long-term health outcomes. In this episode, I talk through the ins and outs of sleep and blood sugar, and ..read more

Plant based - whether that be vegan or just a conscious reduction of animal products - is HOT right now. It’s not really a secret that I personally am a big fan and eat this way myself. But, like anything, there are pros and cons. PROS ?Research supports plant forward approaches reducing risk of gestational diabetes and improving blood sugar ?reduced risk of things like diabetes and heart disease. ?better gut health ?Lots of micronutrients and antioxidants, which keeps your nutrient stores topped up and supports bub to hit milestones in their development ?Can help keep weight gain within guide ..read more

GESTATIONAL DIABETES | Eating out

This episode is all about eating out while balancing your blood sugar. This is something pretty much all of my clients find challenging, and was highly requested.   I'm not surprised.   Having gestational diabetes can feel scary, stressful and lonely enough. I can only imagine how deflating it must be to feel like the joy of eating out with friends and family, which is a huge part of our culture and in celebrating this special time in your life, has been taken away from you.   I want you to know that gestational diabetes isn't a sentence to only eating chicken and broccoli. You ..read more

FITNEST MAMA | Everything you need to know about exercise during pregnancy with gestational diabetes

We all know we should be doing exercise, right? It’s good for our physical health, mental health and your blood sugar. So it's a no brainer to fit it into your day, right? Except that ... sometimes life gets in the way and sometimes it can be hard, and how the hell are you meant to know what to do when you're pregnant! It's not always simple.  It's a bit like with food how we all generally know the gist of what’s good for us (moving our body, eating fruits and vegetables), but the tricky thing is actually knowing HOW to do this, and what specifics to focus on in certain times, again, like ..read more

BIRTH STORY | Alana. One pregnancy. Gestational diabetes. Spontaneous labor. Physiological birth.

If there’s one key thing I want you to know about managing gestational diabetes, it’s that it doesn’t have to feel restrictive.  If you’re hating what you’re eating, spending a lot of time hungry, constantly getting food envy, sick of eating low carb bread and lettuce burgers, and/or scrolling wishfully through all the carby things you “can’t” have on instagram, I can’t stress enough that it doesn’t have to feel this way.  Healthy eating with GD is essentially the same as healthy eating for everyone. And this can certainly include carbs and delicious things.  Anyway, on today’s ..read more
