Just had word that my interview with Barbara Bietz, author of The Sundown Kid, is now on her blog, ,Jewish Books for Kids. Like The Knish War on Rivington Street, her book was a PJ selection and a Sydney Taylor, Notable Book. Barbara's website is a great source of reviews of books for young Jewish readers, books that often don't get front and center by mainstream reviews. Thank-you Barbara, for including me in such good company ..read more

Meet the Mayor

I woke up this morning to find the Boy Mayor of New York in the New York Times, the same Mayor who became the decider in The Knish War on Rivington Street. Since the New York Times only reported the heated up knish war in January of 1916, I had to find a solution...and this man, Mayor John Purroy Mitchel popped up in my research. Yes, I even sent his picture in a high hat for the illustrator to use. His short but celebrated life would make a good novel...he's such a man of his time. My morning started with an accidental finding...old, old emails just popped up when I opened my computer. I started deleting until I came upon a lovely note from Oct, 2008, that should have been included with the reviews of Stanley Hayami, Nisei Son. I've added it to the Hayami pages and I publish it here with thanks: I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Stanley Hayami, Nisei Son". His writings and especially his drawings gave a powerful insight into his thoughts and character. I knew from the cover that Hayami would be KIA, and yet I wept at the end when you told the reader of Hayami’s death. I a ..read more

Going Buggy! Award

Thanks to the pandemic I've turned up an award I almost forgot about. Leafing through a stack of old letters, this was a bug I loved finding. It came with letters from a classroom in the Macatina School in Quebec. I know at the time I wrote back to thank the students, but that was before I had a blog where I could share their art and writing. Although Have You Seen Bugs? is now only available in libraries and used books stores, this was my reward for cleaning up and turning up a first class First Place Prize! Thanks again, River Jacobie Mitchell ..read more

Good news! Just discovered that there is a Kindle edition of the Knish War!Imagine, if the cast of characters could see their story electronically! A story dear to my heart. Elizabeth Yamada, narrates part of the story on San Diego TV, Channel 10. Elizabeth, one of Miss Breed's children, wrote the introduction to my book, Dear Miss Breed and has become a dear friend. Also on the video, Rick Crawford who was so helpful in giving us photos and authentic newspapers with photos that didn't show up on microfilm.
