The 100-yojana problem of the Ramayana researchers
Jayasree Saranathan

Very often Ramayana mentions 100 yojanas in different contexts, but 2 contexts have been taken up by our researchers. 1. From somewhere in the Vindhyas Sampati saying that Lanka was 100 yojanas away from there 2. Ram Setu was 100 yojanas long. Taking 1 yojana = 8 miles, they say that Lanka must have been 800 miles from there and suggest that Hanuman jumped from Mahendragiri in Odisha to Sri Lanka. The other group prefers to reject Ram Setu because it is not 800 miles long. So, they choose to locate Lanka somewhere in the Indian Ocean south off India at a distance of 800 miles. I wonder why ..read more

(Published in Geethcharyan Magazine) ..read more

Recently I published my research on the date of Adi Shankara as a book in print and also as an eBook on kindle.  The book has 8 chapters in 66 pages. The cover picture was made by Mr. Hayavadhan.  The purpose of the book was to find out the birth year of Adi Shankaracharya for which I collected all the olden texts and those written by scholars of recent times to pick out the date features of Adi Shankara. Fortunately, most of the authors including Cithsukhacharya, a contemporary of Adi Shankara were unanimous in stating his birth in Nandana year, Vaishakha month, Shukla Pancami a ..read more

Where was Krishna's Dwaraka (My talk in Satyameva Jayate clubhouse)
Jayasree Saranathan

Part 1 of my talk on the location of Krishna's Dwaraka.  At first, I am discussing the feasibility of Bet Dwaraka in the Kutch region and the marine excavations in the Cambay region for being Krishna's Dwaraka. They don't match with Krishna's date of leaving the world in 3101 BCE.  Then I start finding its location from the details given in Harivamsa. Dwaraka was an island off the coast of Prabhas, i.e., Somnath. The nimitta-s noticed before the Dwaraka flood are discussed to know the nature of the calamity that befell on Dwaraka.  The last moments of the Vrishni-s and the ..read more

Is it necessary to celebrate Women's Day? (My talk in Twitter Spaces)
Jayasree Saranathan
by

Should we in India need a special day for women, namely, the International Women's day?  This question might sound provocative, particularly after I received a citation honouring me on the Women's Day. I am very much agreeable to honoring the hard work and contribution of any one - irrespective of being a woman or man. But thinking of the underlying concept of the International Women's Day, I have certain reservations. The International Women's Day was adopted by the UN sometime in the 80s with specific goals such as gender equality, reproductive rights and to stop violence and abuse agai ..read more
