The Studio Session That Almost Didn’t Happen

I’ve got a story to share with you. It’s a good one… A maiden in distress (me). A loving sidekick. A serious problem. A hero on a white horse (well, porch). And a fairytale magical ending. This past summer I had some studio mini sessions set up at Zurie Studio in Clintonville. The day of the sessions, I went early to set up. Got all of my stuff out of my car, put it all in the studio. My first friend arrived. I had been looking forward to this particular session for days. Rachel set her stuff inside. Then… we both walked outside to grab something and the locked door closed behind us. I had no ..read more

Client Interview Series: Feels Like Family with The Schafers

These client interviews are created to share unedited feedback from families I’ve worked with over the years. Included are family photos, shared with their permission. Meet the Schafer Family. I met Melissa and Kenny early on as I was starting my business. At the time they had a daughter and were expecting their second child. They now have three girls, and I’ve photographed two newborn sessions at home, a session at a cabin, a session in their sweet town of Hilliard, a gingerbread making morning, and sessions in metro parks and playing at home on the trampoline. I kinda feel more like an out-o ..read more

These client interviews are created to share unedited feedback from families I’ve worked with over the years. Included are family photos, shared with their permission. Meet the Gavlak Family. I met Heather and Bobby in 2014 (yes, NINE years ago… gulp). We bonded easily and quickly over our love of jokes and donuts. I got to know their oldest daughter Grace before she became a gorgeous, wonderful teen. Met their middle before he was - oh wait, nope, he’s the same sweet and ornery Mitch he’s always been. And I met their youngest, Andy, at her newborn photography session the following year. They ..read more

Seeds of Caring: 3 ways to spark acts of kindness for kids

If you’re a parent, you likely feel the same weight that I do of making sure that our little people turn in to amazing, kind, capable adults. We want them to be the kids that notice when someone is left out on the playground, the ones that ask “are you okay?”, the ones that say “come on over, play with us”, and the ones that feel compelled to act when they see someone being bullied. Have you heard of Seeds of Caring? They are a non-profit based here in Columbus (and expanding beyond as I write) with the goal of creating a future with more kindness, more empathy and more inclusiveness. Thro ..read more

Magic in the Mundane (and 3 FAQs about winter photos)

A little article I wrote for a local publication. I thought I’d share with you what magic in the mundane means to me… Have you ever stopped in the whirlwind of it all, right in the middle of an everyday moment with your family, when everything feels a little out of control and chaotic and messy and overwhelming and think… “This is insane, but I love it so much”? Maybe yes, maybe no.  It took me a long time after having kids to have that perspective.  For years it felt more like “Oh my gosh, someone please rescue me, I’m drowning among these little needy people.”  It really is ..read more

My Second Life: Building a Photography Business

Do you know the podcast Second Life? It’s about changing direction. It’s filled with stories of pivot and transition at all stages of life. I’m drawn to it because I find it relatable. My degree is in public health. I was a health inspector for many years. I tromped in creeks taking water samples, inspected pools and schools, and reviewed plans for new restaurants. That’s what I was doing when I found out I was pregnant with my oldest. After he was born, I left my job but kept up my certification, thinking that I’d go back to it a year or so after staying home. I even planned on getting a mas ..read more

My good friend just got her certification to administer Birkman assessments (think behavior and strengths test), and she needed a few guinea pigs to take the test and have her deliver and interpret their results. A recent conversation went something like this… Her: So to complete the certification, I need a couple… Me: OH MY GOD, ME ME ME! Her: …people to take to the assessment. Ok, are you sure? You’d need… Me: YES! A THOUSAND TIMES YES! I LOVE A QUIZ. Her: …ok, cool. So you’ll take an online test and I’ll go over your results with you and… Me: I LOVE BEING ASSESSED. THIS IS THE BEST. Her ..read more

Columbus Ohio Family Photographer: On The Meaning of Dandelions

Dandelions are weeds. Several people mentioned this to me when I picked a dandelion for my logo. Why would you pick a weed to represent your business? When I was little we used to rub dandelions on our friends arms and say it was pee. We would pluck the tops from the stems and smear the golden petals with our foot just to see the color it made on the concrete. We would kick the tops off when they were fluffy and white so they were just collections of bare stems in the grass. Some people call them “piss-in-the-beds” because they’re known to have a diuretic affect if you eat them. So there’s t ..read more

But I’m not photogenic.

Have you said it? Thought it? Believed it? “I’ve wanted to get family photos for a long time, but…” The sentence is finished with many things… But we just haven’t done it. But I want to lose weight first. But we are waiting for fall. But we are waiting for spring. But I don’t know what to wear. But we never have time. But we just don’t look like those families. But we aren’t photogenic. But I’m not photogenic. This is a conversation I have a lot. Like… a lot a lot. I get it. I’ve been on the other side of the camera many times, and it’s a strange feeling to know you’re being seen and captu ..read more
