Species List:
I visited Taronga yesterday and decided to compile a Species list based on species I’ve seen and signage. Even though I don’t visit Taronga often (I’m not a local); hopefully this can be a helpful resource for those who use this website.
Keep in mind there are also species kept off display.
Any species signed but seen are marked with an asterisk.
Mammals:
Marsupials: (11)
Goodfellows Tree Kangaroo *
Koala
Quokka *

Hi there.
This is my first post here. Looking for honest opinions from Aussies in the industry.
I’m a 52 year old female.
Am I too old to be a zookeeper?
It’s something I’ve always been interested in but got married and had a family…blah blah blah… so the idea has never gone anywhere.
I’ve done a Cert 2 in Animal Studies, ran my own pet sitting business for many years and have experience working at a kennel. I am about to start volunteering at a local wildlife facility.
I do know of...

currently 2 zoos in Australasia house Malayan Tapirs (Adelaide Zoo and Melbourne Zoo). Adelaide Zoo houses a Daughter Born At Adelaide to a male imported from Singapore Zoo in 1997 [died 2008] and a female from Henry Doorly Zoo (USA) in 1998 [still at Adelaide]. Melbourne Zoo houses a female born at Taronga Zoo in Sydney in 1999 to a male imported from Toronto Zoo (Canada) in 1996 [at Hunter Valley Zoo since mid-2015, died August 2018] and a female from Philadelphia Zoo (USA) in 1998 [died...

I visited Adelaide Zoo on the 18/07/2024, and made note of every species I saw, or that was signed. I likely missed a few species due to not spending a huge amount of time at every enclosure/aviary, so I do apologise for that. Also, this is my first attempt at posting a species list, so please do correct me if I missed anything/you have any tips on how to improve for next time
There was an unsigned tortoise species in the "nursery" near the old petting zoo. If anyone knows what it is,...

Gumbuya Park have welcomed four Mountain Pygmy Possum joeys (more joeys are expected in the near future as well).
MOUNTAIN PYGMY POSSUM UPDATE
We have successfully bred our MPP’s again this year with at least 4 joeys (and more on the way) that have emerged from the nest.
This young Joey was a bit scared of the moth, but Mum came to the rescue to help

I finally got to visit Sydney Aquarium last weekend.
It was quite impressive - some very good displays there. Not a lot of exotic fish, mostly focussing on Australian fish - not that this is a problem, there were a LOT of tourists there who I'm sure would love to see our local marine life.
Quite a good platypus display, some excellent tropical fish displays and the seals and sharks are pretty impressive.
The only negative comment I would make is that the underwater viewing areas in...

The park has again been successful in rearing black-necked stork, the only captive collection to breed these birds.
2 chicks were hatched last October and the park is now looking for names for them.

I keep finding articles mentioning a birth in 2010, but can't find any other record of the infant. Does anyone have information?
