Most kids are thinking about summer vacation, but 12-year-old Stevie Welte, of Lake Havasu City, is gearing up to compete in the upcoming UCI World BMW ( Bicycle Moto Cross) Championship and will be representing the United States in Rock Hill, S.C.
“Stevie, has been racing BMX since age 3. She won her first of four consecutive state championships at age 5,” said proud parent Scott Welte.

Students enrolled in Career and Technical Education Programs at Lake Havasu High School were recognized at the annual WAVE and Career and Technical Education (CTE), Shining Knights Award ceremony at Lake Havasu High School Performing Arts Center Monday night.
Each year, awards are given to students who have demonstrated excellence in their program by their respective teachers. A teacher is also awarded the CTE Lifetime Achievement award as well.

The Lake Havasu Unified School District K-12 Foundation hosted its 18th annual academic recognition banquet at Shugrue’s Bridgeview Room, Friday evening.
“Stars of the Night” honored students who have achieved the highest level of honor – or Summa Cum Laude, with an unweighted GPA of 3.9 or higher.
Also honored were educators who provided support, guidance and encouragement to students.
The keynote speaker for the event was Lake Havasu High School principal Scott Becker.

Lake Havasu City Air Force Airman first class veteran Gary R. Piekaar was honored last Monday with the presentation of a Quilt of Valor.
The Lake Havasu City chapter of the Quilts of Valor Foundation – Stitching for Patriots – presented the quilt.
Piekaar was nominated by Chrissy Lin through the Stonebridge Veterans group, a program under the Havasu Community Health Foundation.
The mission of Quilts of Valor, according to its website, is to “cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and health Quilts of Valor.”

A very special event happened Friday at Crazy Horse Campground in Lake Havasu City.
Jo Crawford, director of Arizona Water Sports was on hand to kick off the Adaptive Watersports Program in the Western part of the state. She said the program includes water skiing, wakeboarding and kayaking.
“Anybody can do this. And your town is amazing,” Crawford said.
Crawford said the program, in its fourth year, would serve about 45 to 50 people Friday in the kickoff event sponsored by Anderson Toyota and Powersports.

Lake Havasu High School seniors gathered under the London Bridge Tuesday to make a big commitment to their futures.
Marsha Becker, CT coordinator for Lake Havasu Unified School District and WAVE, said, “Under the Bridge today we are celebrating seniors making a decision about their future.
“This event is called ‘Owning My Future.’”
Becker said it’s the second year for the celebration.

For those lucky enough to be at the Bridgewater Channel in Lake Havasu City Friday morning, a roaring display greeted them.
Desert Storm presented its annual Parade of Power Friday morning, followed by Shugrue’s Shootout Saturday morning.
According to event organizer Steve Ticknor, more than 120 boats participated in Desert Storm events throughout the week and weekend.

Pure power was on display at the annual Desert Storm Street Party Thursday afternoon on McCulloch Boulevard.
The boats lined the Downtown District for all to view them up close.
Friday morning, the Parade of Power is in the Bridgewater Channel at 11 a.m.
Saturday morning, the Shugrue’s Shootout will be near Site 6 at 10 a.m.

Kruisin’ For a Kause photo gallery sponsored by Anderson Powersports
Desert Storm boat operators volunteered their time Wednesday morning for Kruisin’ For a Kause. The event is one of the many activites surrounding Desert Storm.
Rise, Milemarkers, ARC, New Horizons and LHHS All Abilities students were invited to ride on the Desert Storm boats.
The participants also were treated to lunch by Stoney’s and got to listen to music provided by a DJ.
