AI Copywriting: Find the Perfect Word

Before talking about using AI copywriting tools, I’m going to vent for a sec. I still think that junior writers shouldn’t really need to be using this stuff. There’s no way to become a better writer without being utter dog shit first. There’s no way of knowing what sounds dope without having the perspective of what sucks. There’s no way to effectively write and edit without putting in your reps–writing a spread of branded content. And there’s no difference with the topic of this blog.  It might sound simple, but I kinda think word choice is an advanced topic.  You’d probs do best ski ..read more

Will Copywriting be Replaced by AI?
Diverge
by Ben Duckworth

My knee jerk reaction is HELL NO!’  But I think that’s every copywriter’s response about this stuff. People, not just copywriters, are so nose to  the grindstone that they never take a second to scan the landscape. New tools may sprout up and disrupt their livelihood, and instead of embracing change, they yell “NO!” and eventually get phased out. Typewriters got phased out by computers. Traditional media got phased out by the internet. Web got phased out by web 2.0. Instead of just another article from a venting copywriter complaining how AI is canned and robotic. Or how it can never ..read more

Copywriting Basics - How to Write Good Headlines
Diverge

Writing a kickass headline is one of the hardest things you’ll do as a copywriter. It’s also an expectation–it’s why a lot of people search you out. So if you’re looking for where to learn copywriting, or looking for a leg up, being able to write good headlines can’t hurt. Or, that’s been my experience at least.  Getting good with headlines is also something that makes other writers uncomfortable and self-conscious. If you can slam headline after headline. Swap tone and match brand style all in the same day. Man, that’s the kinda skill you’ve got to hone. It gives you a serious ..read more

Is Copywriting Dead? Pt. 2

If you didn’t catch Pt.1, I ramble a bit about generative AI. I think it sets the stage well for this post. Actually, no it doesn’t. But you should read it anyway–it’s pretty fun. Check it out here.  Another angle to the question is: yeah, well, copy no longer reads as if a professional writer meticulously crafted the words. And that the craft and beauty of copy is dead. It’s now just adults trying to figure out which gen-z slang terms can make their product sound hip and different.  I wholeheartedly disagree. Copywriters have always just sales bros that know how to build brands and ..read more

Why Hire a Freelance Creative Over an Agency?

If you’re a fortune500 company, have a massive budget, and all you want is a big team of people to run your marketing. Then yeah, maybe an agency is a good choice.  Though if I were running a business, I’d be crawling Linkedin and Working-Not-Working, looking for a small specialized studio or talented freelancer.  Here, Let Me Set the Stage I was doing a copywriting gig for a small design studio out of LA. When I mean small, it’s two extremely talented designers that work together and produce some incredible work. But that’s it. They hit me up to write an About page to help distingui ..read more

I’ve seen this question thrown around. It has too many factors to answer with a single post. And I’m just going to be rambling, because who the hell knows. Let me kick start part 1 with the heavy hitter. Generative AI.  People in my life (more than I care to count) keep asking me if my career is on a death march. If generative AI has made me obsolete. I always say the same thing--As long as there’s money to be made, there’ll be copywriters. This job is essential for sales and marketing efforts, and I can’t see business owners trusting other staff members to manage content. Or companies li ..read more
