So says the strap line for the 3rd edition of the magazine. The class have been working towards the completion of their News For Kids for a publication deadline of end of half term. This is a mammoth undertaking of co-ordination - of hustling for completed articles, editing, writing an editorial, ensuring all is fit (enough) for printing and collation of an ever larger product. This is it, hot off the press, ready for a huge collation effort which lasted a day because some fairly vital elements had not survived the printing process well. There is a balance to be had between using up a ream o ..read more

The Birth of the Universe - as told by the children

The more experienced children in class have heard the first of the Great Stories many times - and for some, this is likely to be their last opportunity to experience it within our setting before they move onto pastures new. In celebration of their responsibility, they were invited to recreate the story themselves to present to our less experienced and new class members, with the only proviso that they treat it with gravitas. This has been a long work, undertaken with a lot of thought. The children have had to navigate different timetables of attendance, work as a group to understand the charts ..read more

With donations from the 4th edition of 'News for Kids' the children chose to support Ukrainian refugees via the Disasters Emergency Committee (EDC), researched by one of the children. The publication came out just in time for the end of the summer term. Editors were voted for and co-opted, a mix of new and experienced, to co-ordinate articles, their choice, their completion and their fit for publication; together with the writing of an editorial, design of cover, copying and collation. Thinking of our impact on the environment, this time around, we printed off just one copy for each family and ..read more

It was asking to happen - we have the solution, so now find a problem to make use of it. The heatwave provided just that. Our gazebo 'canvass' has been used a multitude of times to create dens. This summer and near the term end, has been the perfect time to use it to create not one, but two, Olympic-Sized Swimming (paddling!) pools. The children came up with the idea, the bargaining/marketing ploy/proposal and the promise to use the contents afterwards to water the garden. A joyous time! It also had to happen that paddling turned into an all out water fight and self-dunking malarky. All it too ..read more

Some of our leavers and those who would be in traditional year 6, have been testing themselves with, marking themselves against and then setting up timetables for revision against entrance exam, 11 plus and SATS papers. We tap into EDPLACE to help the children check themselves against the standards expected of children in the mainstream and the children have access to Word, Excel and Powerpoint to type up or present what they are working on, where appropriate Otherwise, the children use the Montessori materials and hands on learning to support understanding, working individually or in small, m ..read more

The Montessori Materials as Teachers

The idea that there is control of error within the materials starts in Children's House and permeates through to the elementary class. It doesn't always need an adult to highlight what it correct and incorrect in a child's work. Often the materials will help the children see for themselves. When you have to raid other maths materials, not just once but several times and then when you still don't have enough hundreds, go on to raid the beads in the craft cupboard - something is telling you that you haven't quite got square root nailed with the pegboard! And the lead teacher can get a cup of tea ..read more

- or Our day trip to Braywick Nature Centre (Phone number: 01628 777440.) We had a wonderful day at Braywick on our delayed class trip from the previous term (due to the extreme heat). In the morning, Phil took us to explore some signature trees on the site and then we went pond dipping. In the afternoon, we 'meadow scaped'. The weather was kind. It was a great way to introduce some potential new children to our group. We were immersed in nature. It was a lovely way to start the new term and we have booked again to celebrate our last day of winter term ..read more

To badly paraphrase a very old Diana Ross song! One of the first 'goings out' for a long time organised by the children was to do the planning and shopping for their challenge - to create for the group a salad made entirely of fruits, even the dressing, that a scientist would classify as fruit but the greengrocer wouldn't, to have with our lunch. We rely on our wonderful volunteers to supervise goings out and so, to make life kinder, we all walked up to 'the station' to meet Heidi so that the older children could carry out their of the challenge and us others could go to the museum. The train ..read more
