Hi folks! Fairly new to the Southwest and seeking paddling companions. Recent push through the Grand Canyon has me itching for more adventures! Upper Rio Grand and possibly southern Colorado are easy access. Happy paddling, see y’all out there.

Two of us (Keith Ellis and I) did a 4 day trip from North Rim to South Rim Grand Canyon May 20-23, 2022 using packrafts to cross the Colorado. It was a second attempt, with a prior trip being diverted to a Rim to Rim backpack on corridor trails due to an October snowstorm.

After leaving a car at Lipan point, and arranging a shuttle to Jacob Lake Inn on North Rim on our arrival day, we got a ride to the Nankoweap trailhead on the North Rim at dawn the next morning. The Nankoweap has a reputation as ..read more

In the summer of 2014 I did a 6 day, 120 mile ish hike/packraft from the CDT near Cuba, NM north to the Chama river at the monastery. I inflated and ran rapids, reservoirs, and rebar for the next few days down to the confluence of the Chama and the Rio Grande. From there down the dark canyon through Bandolier and then fighting the wind across Cochiti Lake. I originally planned to hike back to my staring point from here but wildfires spreading through the Valle Caldera throughout my trip resulted in the evacuation of the village where I was going to leave my car. Instead I got dropped off at th ..read more

A few weeks ago I attended the annual Grand Canyon self-support with 8 other likeminded folks.
It’ll be weeks until I have a chance to sit down and process photos, and probably longer until I’ve fully processed the whole trip.
But I wanted to share a teeny, tiny slice of awesome before winter bleeds into spring and my schedule goes apeshit.

First clip is from Tiger Wash. We all know that the seam monsters can wreak havoc – and that they often do. This was the only time on this trip that I got absorbed/swallowed by one. I had to wait a few seconds until it relea ..read more

Heart of Alaska is a film project about Hig and Erin’s 800 mile, hike and packraft expedition around Cook Inlet. We’ve launched a kickstarter to help finance the film. Please spread the word and if you can, consider becoming a backer.

Only two more weekends of release flows over 500 from El Vado dam. After Labor Day it’s all over. I’m heading up this Sat for one last run. If anyone has never tried the Chama it’s a great river! Pretty relaxing place up there too. Cheers.

Packrafted Rio Grande through White Rock Canyon, NM near Santa Fe at 650 cfs, 2 Alpaca packrafts, 11-13 August 2014.
