Bardet-Biedl syndrome proteins regulate intracellular signaling and neuronal function in patient-specific iPSC-derived neurons
In the cover story of the April issue of JCI, Dr. Liheng Wang, a CADA member, used Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) and non-BBS patient–derived iPS cells to generate neurons and hypothalamic neurons, thus providing important insights into the mechanisms of BBS-induced obesity. Abstract: Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in genes encoding components of the primary cilium and is characterized by hyperphagic obesity. To in ..read more

Postdoctoral Positions in Neurobiology of Motivation and Behavior
Two postdoctoral associate positions are available in the laboratory of Dr. Xiaobing Zhang in the Department of Psychology and Program in Neuroscience at Florida State University. The Zhang lab is interested in studying neural circuits for the control of motivated behaviors. Our research projects currently focus on the neurobiology of motivated food intake and eating disorders. We combine cutting-edge technologies and behavioral approaches to dissect neural circuits for normal food intake as well as neural dysfunctions that lead ..read more

The hypothalamus for whole-body physiology: from metabolism to aging
Published in Protein & Cell, a teamwork by CADA members Drs. Tiemin Liu, Yong Xu, Chun-Xia Yi, Qingchun Tong, and Dongsheng Cai brought the field an important review on recent advances in hypothalamus regulation of metabolism. Abstract: Obesity and aging are two important epidemic factors for metabolic syndrome and many other health issues, which contribute to devastating diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, stroke and cancers. The brain plays a central role in controlling metabolic physiology in that it integrates ..read more

A neural basis for brain leptin action on reducing type 1 diabetic hyperglycemia
Dr. Qingchun Tong, together with other CADA members including Drs. Yong Xu and Qi Wu, solved a mystery problem on how leptin can rescue hyperglycemia in type 1 diabetes, and this work was published in Nature Communications recently. Abstract: Central leptin action rescues type 1 diabetic (T1D) hyperglycemia; however, the underlying mechanism and the identity of mediating neurons remain elusive. Here, we show that leptin receptor (LepR)-expressing neurons in arcuate (LepRArc) are selectively activated in T1D. Act ..read more
