On the 16th of February 1986 the Russian cruise liner the Mikhail Lermontov ran aground on rocks near Port Gore in the Marlborough Sounds. Twenty years later amber jewellery salvaged from the ship has been reborn, reinvigorated into new striking art forms that preserve the character of the past but create new works with obvious links to New Zealand.

Relive memories of strolling past a Harakeke bush and finding Tūīs feasting on the flax's bright yellow pollen.
Inspired by Aotearoa’s most distinctive native flax, the Harakeke earrings are designed to be a minimalistic organic form. Harakeke represents whānau (family) in Māori, and it is known to have amazing healing properties. Besides its cultural significance, Harakeke provides a wonderful shelter for native birds such as Korimako and Tūī.

Let your imagination run wild and find magic and beauty in the unexpected. A Moment On The Lips is a true reflection of Ian’s long-time passion for Surrealism and pays tribute to the great Salvador Dali. To begin with, Heath started with a wax model wher ..read more

“If the architecture is any good, a person who looks and listens will feel its good effects without noticing.” - Carlo Scarpa
The Scarpa Ring was designed by our talented CAD (Computer-Aided Design) Designer, Callum. The concept was born in an endeavour to create a range of men's jewellery designs that have a style and story that is their own.
The Scarpa Ring is inspired by Carlo Scarpa’s architecture, expressed through precision detail using a combination of modernism, historicism and craftsmanship. Designed with aspects of roughness that are accentuated by clean and cr ..read more

Inspiration is everywhere, you just need to look...
As jewellery designers and storytellers, we are always finding inspiration in our everyday life. Take for example, the Clematis ring that our master craftsman, Ben, designed and handcrafted - it was inspired by an old building he came across that was covered in vines as if being reclaimed by earth.
Often, we are inspired simply by the beauty of the gemstones themselves. One of our expert jewellery designers, Charlotte, selected two loose diamonds which she knew just had to be brought together as a ring. The pear cut white diamond ..read more

At VG Jewellers, we capture many people’s love stories in their own unique piece of jewellery, and as you know we love celebrating those stories with you. However, this month we’re celebrating The Village Goldsmith’s original love story. No, it’s not our founder Ian Douglas and his love for jewellery. It’s something even more dear to his heart, his wife and business partner, Christine.
Ian secretly designed a one-of-a-kind birthday gift featuring a rare Argyle pink diamond, right under her nose!
Words by The Village Goldsmith founder and director, Ian Douglas ..read more
